Jean Monnet Summer School 2006 - Trento (IT) and Innsbruck (AT)

The Summer School will last two weeks from Monday 04 to Friday 15 September (arrivals on Sunday 03rd of September and departures on Saturday 17th of September), for a total of 10 full working days.
The Summer School is based on an intensive residential programme, the first week (04 - 9 September) of which will take place in Innsbruck (Austria), the second week (10 - 16 September) in Trento (Italy).
On the 10th of September, there will be the transfer to Trento, which is 2 hours-train journey far from Innsbruck. There are several trains each day in both directions.

The Summer School seeks to analyse the development of a European Public Space in our continent, with a multi-faceted set of policies. The School will help foster analysis, research and discussion on this issue, aiding the understanding of the complexity of the question of the social construction of Europe nowadays and how the EU is responding to the challenges of these last years. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, the Summer School will involve some of the most important scholars in the field from several European countries. It will address a broad range of issues, which include:

• European Constitution;
• European Integration Theories;
• European Foreign Policy;
• Social Movements in Europe;
• European Public Communication;
• Media and the Emerging European Public Sphere;
• Ethnic Diversity in Europe and Sub-State Nationalism.

Admission Procedures
The Summer School targets MA, PhD students and young researchers. Candidates must have a strong interest and some background in the School’s topics and be fluent both in spoken and written English, as it is the working language of the Summer School.
The number of participants is limited to 30.
Ten scholarship will be granted to particularly deserving students who come from one of the Countries included in the official list of Developing Countries made by World Bank. These students have to state their disadvantaged status and motivate their request for a grant to the Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence.
All participants will receive a Certificate which may be used to aquire academic credits in agreement with home institutions.
Moreover, they have to prepare a one-page presentation of their paper or research project that will be presented on a poster in one of the two evening sessions.
The organisation declines any responsibility in case of illness or accidents.

Deadline
Application deadline is 18 June 2006.

Completed applications can be submitted in any one of the following three ways:

- An application form can be completed and submitted online.

Whichever method you choose, the application should contain the following information:
a) personal data: name, surname, gender, nationality, date and place of birth;
b) contact numbers: telephone, fax, e-mail;
c) resume/CV: academic qualifications, current professional or academic position;
d) abstract of the paper or research project;
e) name, title, address, contact numbers and e-mail address of at least one referee who is familiar with the candidate’s academic or professional position.
f) For those who are in the position to request a scholarship, please state if you wish to be considered for it and communicate your estate by email or by fax to the Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence.

A committee of Trento and Innsbruck University professors will select the candidates on the basis of CVs the eight paper-givers evaluating the abstracts and those who will be granted with a scholarship on the basis of merits and personal estate.
Applicants will be notified of the selection results by 20 June 2006 by e-mail. The list of admitted candidates will also be posted on-line at: http://www.soc.unitn.it/poloeuropeo/

Fees and payments

Fees
Summer School fees are € 800,00 (VAT included). This comprises tuition, meals and accommodation. However, travel costs are not covered (nor are costs of journeys from Innsbruck to Trento and back, and internal travel in the two cities).
Ten scholarships are available (reducing the fee to € 400,00). Those seeking such scholarships must make a specific request on the application form. Decisions as regards the award of scholarships will be made on the basis of merits and personal estates by the Scientific Committee.
Fees for participants who are in need of accommodation for only one of the two weeks (i.e. students of Trento and Innsbruck universities) are fixed at € 550,00.
Following the notification of admitted candidates, fees must be paid on or before 30 June 2006.
