2 weeks of profeciency courses (27 hours per week) reserved to students with an already good knowledge of French language or meeting the requirements of the european exchange programs (Erasmus/Socrates, Tempus).
PREPARATORY COURSE TO UNIVERSITY STUDY METHODS
3 weeks in September - 60 hours
Doesn't open to European Credits (ECTS)
Short preparatory program designed for students expecting to pursue their studies in Caen or already enrolled at the University of Caen and having difficulties in their academic studies.
THE WINTER AND SPRING SESSIONS
Two sessions, from September until May - 224 hours per session
Certifications and 30 european credits (ECTS)
French language learning and deepening from beginners’ level to advanced level, using pedagogical methods adapted to each student’s needs. Those programs are open to students of all levels but a TCF of the current civil year is required for their placement (see «Registration terms»). At the end of each session, students will be able to register for free at one DELF or DALF exam.
- Level I (beginners) : Introduction to French I
Preparation to level A1
- Level II : Introduction to French II
Preparation to level A2
- Level III : Practical French Studies Certificate - CPLF
Preparation to level B1
- Level IV : Diploma of French Studies - DEF
Preparation to level B2
- Level V : Advanced Diploma of French Studies - DAEF
2 possible modules : Communication and media - Corporate world and Society
Preparation to level C1
- Level VI : Specialized Diploma of French Studies - DSEF
Beware : opened only during the 2nd semester. In case this diploma couldn’t be open, students having completed level C1 during the 1st semester will not be able to register for the 2nd semester.
This diploma can only be delivered to students having a diploma equivalent to the French baccalaureat.
2 possible modules : Culture and representation - Economy and Society
Preparation to level C2
The assessment, using a 0 to 20 grading scale, is ensured by :
- various homeworks giving a continious assessment grade,
- a final exam.
* perfecting workshops : oral and written French, phonetics.
THE UNIVERSITY DIPLOMA OF SPECIALIZED FRENCH
from September until May - 448 hours
Certification and and 60 european credits (ECTS)
Preparation to the integration in a traditionnal university field of studies through general and specialized French courses and a specialization’s unit.
The DU is organized around 3 units :
- unit 1 : Advanced French
- unit 2 : Specialized French
- unit 3 : Specialization
The DU is offered for the following majors :
Economy and Management, Economics, Logistic, Technology, Law, Literature, FFL Didactics, Biology and Preparation to Bank, Finance and Insurance Studies.
The admission is subject to the decision of a selection committee. Candidates must hold a French Baccalaureat, or any equivalent title, the university titles required for an admission in 1st or 3rd year of studies in France.
They must provide us with the result of a TCF test (less than 2 years old). The required French language profeciency is the «B2» level of the European Commission’s scale ; beginners and semi-beginners will not be accepted.
Due to the admission through selection committee, closing date for pre-registration is May 16th, 2006. Please keep in mind the postal delay when sending the registration file.
For all units, evaluation is made every semester through a continious assessment grade and a final exam. A 0 to 20 grading scale is used.
Are admissible students with a minimum average grade of 10/20. Those units are capitalizable.
After succeeding at the D.U., a proposal of integration in an academic department will be submitted to the CEFE teachers’ council. In addition to that, you will have to respect the regular university admission procedure during your D.U. year : collect, complete and return the 1st cycle admission form within the required dates and take the university mandatory language profeciency test.
Beware ! The pre-registration at the D.U. of Specialized French involves that you complete a specific form. This form can be obtained :
- by mail on request at our secretariat,
- by e-mail as an attached document in PDF format,
- by download in PDF format on our website.
OTHER PROGRAMS AND CERTIFICATIONS
- DELF and DALF
The CEFE, exam center for the DELF and the DALF, offers 2 sessions per year, in January and May.

- The TCF
Starting with the Academic Year 2006/07, the CEFE will be acredited by the CIEP to organize TCF sessions. A schedule of the sessions will be soon available on this website.
- CCIP Diplomas
The CEFE is accredited by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris to conduct exams for the following certificates and diplomas :
- Diploma of Business French 1st and 2nd degrees (DFA 1 et DFA 2)
- Certificate of Legal French (CFJ)
- Certificate of French for Tourism and Hostel Management (CFTH)
Two sessions per year : January and June. (Beware ! The CCIP is sole responsible for the schedules and the CEFE cannot change the dates).

- Language support for Erasmus/Socrates students (SLF1 et SLF2) and for assistants and lecturers
3 hours/week, from September until May - 4 european credits (ECTS) per semester
Language support courses (written and oral French, Grammar) open to every student coming through any exchange program or cooperation agreement.
Teachers’ assistants can also attend those courses.
- Part-time registrations
Depending on the number of places available after the beginning of each session and except for students who would be placed at the beginners’ level by the test, anyone staying in France and justifying of an occupation (au pair, workers, students, researchers, mothers) can register as part-time student for the number of hours of his/her choice, after paying the necessary fees.
