Volunteer Camps in Italy

LUN 16 Fossombrone Marche - Central It. 20/06 - 03/07 10 FEST

The association Nuvole e Zenzero, working from 1990 in the area of the Marche, is
famous for the yearly realization of an international festival named "In viaggio".
The project is made by local youth association to promote ideals of peace and intercultural relations through social inclusion projects. The festival means to involve not only local youngsters but also the migrants resident in the community of Fossombrone, the town where they now live.

LUN 17 Farfa - Roman Ruins Lazio - Central It. 01/07 -15/07 12 ARCH

The work will consist in: renovation of an ancient mill and digging of old canals
that brought water to the mill. Additional works: clearing the land of grumble
and infesting plants, clearing an estate road and paths constructing and
maintenance of fences. Accommodation in a big tent for all the volunteers:
if you want, you can bring your own tent. Only vegetarian food will be available.
Please note that the place is really beautiful but quite isolated in the nature.

This project main goal is to renovate and give a new standard of quality to the protected area in Policastro Gulf in the south of Italy (Campania). The volunteers will give a support to local people to enhance their environmental and cultural background, in order to involve youngsters in a process of exchange of values
and active citizenship. Volunteers will open new paths in the area of Scario and renovate panoramic point of view of the town, together with the creation of new wooden benches and garbage bins.

LUN 20 Cecina Toscana - Central It. 03/07 - 18/07 15 FEST

The International Antiracist Meeting held every summer in Cecina (Tuscany, Italy),
is organised by ARCI and promoted by many public authorities. It is one of the most important events at European level for many associations engaged in the daily fight against all forms of exclusion and intolerance and in promoting equal relations between all citizens - whatever their origins may be. It's an event that involves hundreds of people each year (700 last year):
throughout seven days, discussions will take place in theme-based workshops, in Round Tables
and Conventions, to compare experiences and ideas of those committed to promote civil rights
for all including immigrants and minorities.

These camps are organised together with the local association "I PONTI" that has been
organising, cultural animation and promotion of traditions of this community against
mafia bent and illegality since 1992 in Calabria in the area of Aspromonte. The main
goal of this project is to open this area to other cultures through workcamps as a
tool of a more general learning process. The first turn of this project will be held in Priminoro, 15 kms away from Oppido Mamertina. This is a quite isolated area, where youngsters have few opportunities of development, mobility and in general a difficult socio-ecomonic background. Just the last year the experience of a international workcamp was a first step towards a development of a concept of active citizenship and European dimension. The group of volunteers will open new paths
to connect archeologic areas and the site of Old city of Oppido Mamertina. Volunteers should be willing to interact with the local people

LUN 24 Gioiosa Jonica Calabria - South It. 10/07 - 25/07 15 SOCI

This workcamp is organised in co-operation with the local municipality. They forecast small maintenance works in some green areas but most of all volunteers will be involved in animation activities with the local population with specific reference to disadvantaged youth.

LUN 25 Canzo - New paths Lombardia - North It. 16/07 - 31/07 12 ENVI

Canzo is located in the mountain community of the Lariano triangle where the social cooperative “Meta di Monza” has been working to enhance the traditions and the surrounding environmental heritage for years. The intercultural exchange of international volunteers constitutes the added value to improve the process
of intercultural learning and the broadening towards Europe. The group of volunteers will undertake the work in the fields, together with the staff of the cooperative.
The work will consist of: recovery of the original structure of an ancient mountain living unit, clearing the land of wild plants, maintaining estate roads and paths as well as opening new paths.

The camp will be held in a small town in Southern Italy. This camp is organised together with the local organisation named "Città futura". They are very active and carry on several projects for the benefit of the local community. They tried to attract tourists through the restoration of old rural houses where they host whoever is interested in learning more about traditional handicrafts and rural activities. Tourists can just learn about this in theory but they can be as well involved in the activities. They also host 20 Eritrean refugees that involved in their projects, being this area the place where a lot of refugees arrive after long and dangerous journeys. The workcamp will involve volunteers in daily cleaning of beaches and wants to create communicative relationship between volunteers and people who spend their summer at the sea side. During the afternoon volunteers will do little maintenance works in the village such as painting of fences or constructions of benches.

Scicli is a small town in Sicily island. This area lives mostly on agriculture: it is not particularly poor in itself, but still unemployment and criminal organisations are two of the main problems preventing a true development of the island which would have indeed great potentialities, in terms of both human and natural resources. The partner of this youth exchange is Aurisca, a youth non-profit association. This year Aurisca decided to propose a project with the aims to mix local people with the foreign volunteers and at the same time, trying to enhance a beautiful and interesting part of Scicli. In the project of this year, volunteers will be involved mainly in two activities, the cleaning of Micenci beach and the Awareness campaign for the waste separation trying to involve citizens with all the materials provided by the organisation - posters, leaflets etc- especially through an Info Point placed on the beach. Volunteers will work about five hours a day undertaking the two different activities.

LUN 30 Casperia Lazio - Central It. 28/07 - 10/08 12 FEST

The Casperia village is one of some little municipal on Bassa Sabina zone in the Rieti province, one hour far from Rome. In the community there are 1150 inhabitants, this is a medieval village (1100) its good position is in front of Sabina valley, has a great environmental importance for the beauty of its nature. The group of volunteers will undertake the work of restoration of the historic trails around Casperia. Forecast works are: cleaning of infesting plants, pruning, possible laying of plants and rubble, re-cleaning of the trails and cleaning of Casperia centre. During the camp it will be possible to spend some time with the local young, having dinner and taking part to some local feast events together. Volunteers can swim in Farfa River in an uncontaminated environment during some excursions planned on the programme, and choose to camp within the mountain trails, if they like to. During the second workcamp (1/8-16/8), for the days 5,6,7/08 the volunteers take part to
traditional festival "Sagra dello stringozzo" in collaboration with the local association Pro Loco. Together with the local volunteers the international volunteer will prepare the local festival and help to clean after this.

LUN 31 V. Lambro - Fontanili Lombardia - North It. 29/07 - 12/08 12 ENVI

In the area of the flatland of Erba, halfway between Milan and Como within the Park of Valle Lambro, there are some small underground channels better known as "Risorgive" built in the past centuries and used by the local farmers for watering the fields and quench the cattle. The progressive abandonment of the agriculture led to a spoiling process and some of the "risorgive" finished to be buried in the sand. Indeed a lot of maintenance is needed to take advantage of them in order to use the waters at their best. The workcamp proposed by the environmental organisation Circolo Ambiente "Ilaria Alpi" will be held in this framework: this project includes the maintenance and restoration of some fountains, the construction of an area devoted to visitors and the installation of signs for tourists.

LUN 32 Cercemaggiore Molise - South It. 29/07 - 12/08 12 ARCH

The work-camp will take place in Cercemaggiore, an ancient village of the region Molise. Volunteers will work in an archaeological area named "Monte Saraceno" that is 5/10 minutes walking from the village. The aim of the workcamp is essentially educational because the volunteers will work in order to create an English guidebook of the area devoted to children; so, they will work on the archaeological excavations, searching and cleaning ruins and all the things they will find and, then, set up a sort of archaeological guide for children.

LUN 33 Casaglia Emilia - North It. 01/08 - 14/08 12 RENO

Casaglia is about 7 kms away from Ferrara. This camp is organised in partnership with the Municipality of Ferrara and the local Civil Protection Department.
Two tasks will see involved the group of volunteers. In the morning, they will repair the abandoned bicycles that the municipality collected in order to donate them to local youth organisations. In the afternoon they will perform maintenance work in the building of the civil protection department. Forecast works include carpentry, varnishing, fencing of the garden and construction of a pavement around the house. Manual skills are welcome.

LUN 34 Alberobello Puglia - South It. 02/08 - 16/08 12 RENO

Alberobello (Bari-Puglia) is the village, famous for the "Trulli", a kind of special ancient buildings and situated in the middle of a beautiful valley, called Valle d'Itria. The workcamp will take place in co-operation with the local municipality interested in the social development of the area. The group of volunteers will be engaged both in social and environmental issues such as to renovate a little park for the children and to make animation and recreation activities for older people and children. Accommodation in a house (all facilities provided). TERMINAL: Bari.

LUN 35 Buccheri Sicily - Island 07/08 - 21/08 10 FEST

Buccheri is a little village on the east coast of Sicily, near to Catania, Ragusa
and Siracusa, three beautiful ancient cities of artistic interest. Near to Buccheri
there are also great naturalistic areas. Every year there is a festival in Buccheri,
called "Medfest", which want to enhance tradition of Mediterranean Sea since
medieval ones. On the 1st week the volunteers will clean by weeds the area around
an old castle and church remains, and creating pathways to improve the access to
NIVIERE (OLD ICE RETRIEVING SYSTEMS BUILT WITH VOLCANIC STONE). During the 2nd week of worcamp, the volunteers will organize, together with local volunteers (PRO LOCO), the crowd-gathering medieval festival nicknamed " MEDFEST" which it is expected to host about 50.000 people from all over the country.

LUN 36 Magliano in Sabina Lazio - Central It. 17/08 - 30/08 12 ENVI

Magliano in Sabina is a village in the area of Bassa Sabina in the Rieti province,
one hour far from Rome. In the community there are 3800 inhabitants, this is a medieval village (1200) its good position is in front of Sabina valley, has a great environmental importance for the beauty of its nature. The camp in Magliano is aimed at the development of the local green areas around the historic abbey, The goup of volunteers will clean up the land around the differents green areas and clean and restoring the historic abbey near to village. Forecast works are: cleaning of infesting plants, pruning, possible laying of plants and rubble, restoring the archeological place. An evening event is planned to involve directly the inhabitants with the others participants to the project, to encourage the integration between the hosting community and the international volunteers. LUN 37 Poggio Catino Lazio - Central It. 24/08 - 06/09 12 ENVI
The Poggio Catino village is in the Bassa Sabina zone in the Rieti province, one hour far from Rome. It's a medieval village (1100) and in the community there are 1350 inhabitants. The camp in Poggio Catino is aimed to development the local green areas, the historic tower and improve the awareness of its inhabitants on this issue and at the same time to encourage the integration between the hosting community and the international volunteers. The work: volunteers will perform environmental work on some green areas and restore an ancient trail that start from a tower of "Longobard" age, one of five towers still existing in all Europe
from the Lombard domination. One workcamp part will be devoted to clean the medieval suburb of the village and to organize a special international night with the local inhabitants. The group of volunteers will undertake the work of restoration of the and cleaning of Poggio Mirteto historic centre. Forecast works are: cleaning of infesting plants, pruning, possible laying of plants and rubble, re-cleaning of the trails.

Project:
The Eco-museum of terrace-cultivation and grape-growing of Cortemilia (CN) is part of the established network of Eco-museums of the Piedmont region. The main purpose of the Eco-museums of the Piedmont region is the protection and the evaluation of the historical memory, of the expressions of the material culture and of the way in which human works and traditional settling down have characterized the formation and evolution of the landscape of this region. The intervention of recovery of Monte Oliveto, promoted within the realisation of the Eco-museum of Cortemilia, confirms the cultural dimension of the landscape. The hill of Monte Oliveto, example of the millenary stratification of local knowledge, is portrayed by the following main elements: La ‘Pieve’ (a small parish church), la ‘Cascina’ (a small dairy-farm) and the terraces made of dry wall, which form a kind of spiral growing towards the sky. The project is part of a global re-qualification and revitalisation of the
hill terraces and consists in the restoration & recovery of the ‘Cascina’, which is -apart from the principal building- composed by: an oven, a canteen, an accessory construction and a terrain characterised by those terraces, today partially used and cultivated with grapes and fruits.
Work:
Reconstruction of a characteristic terrace with the special ‘dry wall’ technique (without cement). Repair of a supporting wall.

Project:
Macchiagodena is a small village near Isernia, in the Molise region. In 1992, the priest of the village received a donation of 10 derelict houses. Don Francesco’s idea is to restore them to create the ‘Villaggio San Nicola’ centre, which will serve the village as a meeting point, and will be used for catechising and offering hospitality, etc. This project needs a lot of work. The first intervention of restoration started in October 1996. Thanks to I.B.O. volunteers, after 10 years, a lot of houses have returned to the initial splendour.
Work:
Removal of stones, settlements & making small streets. Construction and plastering of walls. Unskilled work and clearing of weeds. Rebuilding of rooves.
It is pleasant particularly the presence of a carpenter for restauration doors, an electrician, a floor layer, a mason.

Project:
The S. Anna house associaton born in order to help the mothers in difficulty for lodging reason uneasiness poverty with their children. Waiting of the communal permissions and the supervising in order to restore the country house donated to the onlus, they started with the following two projects:

Project:
The Borgo Panigale suburb of Bologna city, has constituted an association committee to recover a drepressed area of 40 ettari bigger. This project wants reorganize old farm house, stable and old cultivation typical of our country. In these associations work disabled people and disadvantaged young. The name of the association that has organised this project is “The Paddock”. Near the association there is a social centre of old people. They cooperate with the Paddock.

Project: Vico Equense is located near Naples, Pompei, Positano and Sorrento, in a suggestive area, rich of natural and archaeological beauties. Volunteers will work in the Environmental Educational Centre called "Il Melograno", placed on the Lattari Mounts, that are a natural park. The work will consist in the maintenance and cleaning of some paths just around the centre, connected with the highest mountain of the zone: Faito Mountain. In the area there is still a spring where there are the “pinguicula hirtiflora”, the unique carnivore plant of Apennines

Project: The workcamp will take place in the municipality of Quincinetto and it will aim at the renovation of ancient footpaths included on the Big Alps Crossing, which gets from Quincinetto to higher picks in the close mountains. These trails let discover the environmental and anthropologist particularities of this area called “Dora Baltea Canavesa”: fauna and flora, quartz mines, rocky imagines… This camp is included in a bigger campaign: “Walk the mountains… and discover the old villages of the Dora Baltea Canavesa”. Volunteers will collaborate in the maintenance and restoration of the wooden signs, “dry walls” and stockades and also cutting shrubs in the green area. Moreover they will participate to anthropologic-naturalistic meetings and excursions with experts and will have the opportunity to discover the traditions of the area

Leg03 Cinisello Balsamo (Mi) Lombardia 16/06/06 02/07/06 ENVI 12
Project: the Parco Grugnotorto-Villoresi is a local Park on the territory of Paderno Dugnano, Cusano Milanino, Varedo, Muggiò, Nova Milanese e Cinisello Balsamo, villages situated in northern hinterland of Milan. The massive urbanization, occurred in this area after Word War II, has mainly changed the features of this territory, today mostly covered by roads, factories and houses, in the place of the old and typical country landscape. That’s why, at the end of the ‘80s, some groups and organizations gathered together and asked for the protection of residual agricultural territories against urbanization. This dream has become reality through the setting up of one of youngest parks in Milan district, Parco Grugnotorto-Villoresi, founded in 1999. This is now a park in “working progress” that need volunteers' help to grow-up. Volunteers will help cleaning the area of the park from rubbish and taking care of the plants recently installed, to keep the green area enjoyable by
people. Beside helping watering the fields during dry days, volunteers will collaborate at the maintenance of Legambiente equipment in the park.

Project: The workcamp is located in the “Matiniti Inferiore” ex-munitions storage that, together with other 24 buildings, was used as an anti-aircraft base during the 2nd World War. The fortress is only 2 km far from the sea and is situated just in front of the Messina Strait. The closeness to both sea and mountain creates a unique combination of colours and smells, and a definitely suggestive landscape. In fact you can easily get from the beaches, crossing the hills, to the woods. The camp aims at restoring and to revaluating a part of the building in order to enable it to host environmental didactic activities for local schools. Volunteers will clean up the area and take off the spoilt items (doors, windows, etc.). Due to the summer high temperatures, they will work very early in the morning.

Leg05 Tavagnasco (To) Piemonte 23/06/06 07/07/06 RENO 14

Project: The workcamp will take place in the area between three small municipalities: Quincinetto, Tavagnasco and Quassolo in the district of Turin near the border with the region Val d’Aosta and it will aim at the renovation of ancient footpaths included in a bigger campaign: “Walk the mountains… and discover the old villages of the Dora Baltea Canavesa”. These trails let discover the environmental and anthropologist particularities of this area called “Dora Baltea Canavesa”: fauna and flora, quartz mines, rocky imagines… Volunteers will collaborate in the maintenance and restoration of the wooden signs, “dry walls” and stockades and also cutting shrubs in the green area. Project: The workcamp will take place in Massa Lubrense, a small village situated on the farthest edge of Sorrento Peninsula. The recent institution of the Natural Marine Reserve aims to keep natural one of the most beautiful and rank coast of Italy. For this reason it was established the Environment and Legality Observatory, assigned to Legambiente to spread the idea of environmental legality and to help in monitoring and preventing illegality actions on the coast. In this rich place the volunteers will be involved in helping the Reserve and Observatory staff in spreading and informing the tourist and all the people about the peculiarity of the Reserve. They will be involved also in cleaning the beaches and in collecting interviews of the tourist to improve the activities of the Reserve.

Project: Viggiù is a village of about 5000 inhabitants near the border with Switzerland, and a represents an important historic and natural area. The Prealpine zone of Varese district is covered with several kinds of vegetation: woods of chestnuts beeches and other broadleaf, peaty-marshy areas rich of fauna. This territory is important also under the geological point of view, in the past it was famous for the "Pica Sass", quarryman who worked also for the construction of the “Duomo” in Milan. Volunteers will work in the maintenance of paths in the woods of “Orsa Hill” and in particular in the “Linea Cadorna”: trenches of the First World War now used like naturalistic paths. They will also help in cleaning the gardens around the camp’s accommodation from rubbish and weeds. Moreover volunteers will be involved in the organization of cultural events with local people.

Leg10 Cava d’Ispica (Rg) Sicily 01/07/06 15/07/06 ENVI 15
Project: Cava d’Ispica (Ispica’s quarry), known as the cave town, is one of the oldest and most important ancient craggy town of the Eastern Sicily. It’s situated in a spectacular 13km-long canyon, formed by a continuous succession of necropolis and craggy settlements. Volunteers, in collaboration with the Cultural Superintendence, will restore and clean up the ancient village called “Pernamazioni”. Accommodation will be particularly austere in an old colonial house restructured with ecological criteria, now transformed in a mountain hut managed by Klaura co-operative, working in responsible tourism and trekking. The sea is not very far and it is foreseen to have different excursions to the wildest and most uncontaminated places

Leg11 San Stino di Livenza (Ve) Veneto 01/07/06 14/07/06 ENVI 15
Project: San Stino di Livenza is a village situated in the Oriental Plain of the Veneto region, about one hour far away from Venezia and Treviso. The municipality offers an interested historic and cultural patrimony (churches and a castle) but also, from the environmental point of view, a natural patrimony with the Livenza river, the Bandiziole marsh, and Prassacon wood. This wood is included in a project for the reforestation of the area started 10 years ago which main objective is the creation of a wood in the plain, where there was one in the past, to revalorise and restore the environment and develop cultural, tourist and didactical activities in the future. Volunteers will be involved in this context and will work in the maintenance and restoration of the wood. Moreover they will also make manual wooden signs for the visits.

Project: Malegno and Lozio are two small neighboring villages located in the middle of Valcamonica, an ancient valley of glacial origin famous for its beautiful mountains that surround it and for its rock engravings, included in the UNESCO World Heritage Humanity List. During the first week, volunteers will be engaged to arrange some paths by an ancient Roman bridge in Malegno, the lower part of the valley; during the second week they will work in Lozio, one thousand meters high. During the fieldwork, volunteers will be followed by a group of local young people

Project: Since seven years Legambiente, in collaboration with “Spazio Autogestito” Association, is making international workcamps to renovate and bring out the value of the Natural Reserve Aniene’s Valley, located inside Rome. Thanks to the involvement of many international volunteers, the area has been restored, stopping also the fast urban development that usually destroys all the urban natural areas. This year volunteers will be involved in many different activities like: the maintenance of natural paths, helping the hosting and information centre staff (River’s house and Cervelletta house), the creation and the placement of wooden informative boards along bicycle tracks, collection and cleanness of rubbish, creation of a system support for the canoe. Workcamps will have several cultural activities like theatre, open-air cinema, and visits to the Reserve. All this events will be a way to attract local residents and there will be the chance to start an intercultural
exchange between volunteers and local people

Leg14 Crandola Valsassina (Lc) Lombardia 02/07/06 15/07/06 ENVI 12
Project: the green valley of Valsassina, is located between Grigne massif on the West and Bergamo Pre-Alps on the East. Valsassina is very rich from the point of view of nature and variety of landscapes, and goes from Como Lake to Pre-Alps cliffs, situated 2.500 meters a.s.l. Due to its position, it has always been considered an ideal place for the trade transit, in spite of its fame of difficult access. Volunteers will work on the environmental maintenance of the areas nearby Crandola Valsassina, the village that will host and support volunteers in their activities. The works will be done mainly in the surrounding mountainous areas (footpaths, environmental maintenance of alpine rural areas etc.). Volunteers will walk to the work places along the mountainous footpath immersed in the alpine nature.

Leg15 Bacchereto (Po) Tuscany 03/07/06 17/07/06 ENVI 15
Project: Bacchereto is a village situated in a wonderful area near Carmignano, famous to be Leonardo da Vinci grandmother’s hometown. The area is close to the most important artistic cities of Tuscany, like Florence, Siena, Volterra, Montecatini. The surrounding landscape is the typical Tuscany one, rich in woods, hills and olive trees. Interesting archaeological and renaissance finds are also important attractions for tourists, as well as the typical cooking with wines and olive oil. Workcamp aim is to restore the path connecting the 2 villages of Bacchereto and Vinci; volunteers will also set new signs about the typical flora and fauna on the same path and they will create picnic areas in the most remarkable locations. Another goal is the revaluation of the natural, cultural and naturalistic heritage.

Leg16 Cutrofiano (Le) Puglia 03/07/06 16/07/06 ARCH/ENVI 12
Project: Cutrofiano is a small village placed in a equidistant position between the Adriatic and the Ionic coast, 30Km from the two seas. The area is characterised by centuries-old trees, and by the traditional production of handcraft made in terracotta and with the typical stone of this area called "pietra leccese" (stones of Lecce"). This year volunteers will be active in the renovation of the Via Romana (Roman route), located inside an archaeological area rich of rocky graves, ancient farms and an underground oil-mill dated XVII century already renovated with the past workcamps. The project aims to the restoration and renovation of the archaeological sites next to Cutrofiano. Furthermore volunteers will be involved in the elaboration of a photographic reportage about the sites before and after the interventions which will be used at local level for the revalorisation of the areas. The program will include the creation of little stone walls to define the route and the
placement of informative boards inside the archaeological sites. In the free time there will be opportunities for bicycle excursions, or visits to the sea. Volunteers will work during the first hours of the morning (5 am to 11am), to avoid the high temperature of the summer

Leg17 Corleto (Sa) Campania 03/07/06 18/07/06 ENVI 15
Project: Corleto Monforte is a small village situated in the centre of the Cilento and Valle del Diano National Park. It is characterises by a wonderful mountain landscape and a rich tradition coming from the different civilisations have lived in the area: Lucani, Greeks, Romans,… All of them have left many historic and archaeological testimonies. The village, up of a rock that dominates the Fasanella’s Valley till Paestum, is situated at 670metres over sea’s level and born under the lucani civilisation in the fifth century BC. The workcamp aim is the maintenance and cleaning up of the ancient path “Capo delle armi”, that arrives at water-mill from the 1700. Besides, volunteers will remove small dumps from the mountain beech-wood of Corleto.

Project: The work camp will live in an area of a major naturalistic interest of the area of Salento. Volunteers' tasks will be creating a proper natural path for excursions, cleaning the trails, installing road signs and monitoring for the frequent wood fires. In particular, volunteers will work to an extension of the trail called “Macchie di Ugento” belonging to an important local excursion path network planned by Legambiente and other associations. Possible nice excursions to the historical centre of Ugento, to Lecce and Otranto: swimming in the clear sea of Torre Mozza is a must!

Project: Bisalta is a small mountain community situated in Cuneo district and formed by 5 municipalities: Boves, Chiusa di Pesio, Peveragno (Municipalities Valli Colla, Pesio e Josina), Beinette and Pianfei. The workcamp aims to the restoration and revalorisation of the footpaths’ net of the area, long about 142 Km. Volunteers will work in the maintenance of these paths: cutting grass, removal of infesting plants, reconstruction of “dry walls”, position of wooden signs… All the techniques used for this maintenance will respect the nature, and will try to keep the environmental sustainability in the area. Volunteers will be hosted in a splendid and functional hostel situated in the slopes of the Mountain Bisalta, in the Alps.

Leg21 Limbiate (Mi) Lombardia 09/07/06 23/07/06 ENVI 12
Project: The workcamp will take place in Groane Park, an evocative site with pine-tree and oak woods, situated in the village of Limbiate, one of the areas more populated of Milan district. The park has a typical flora due to the unusual acidity of the ground. The village offers the opportunity of visiting the main town of Milan, the city of Monza with the largest park of Europe, and the artistic city of Como. In Limbiate there is Crivelli Palace too, which was Napoleone Bonaparte house. Volunteers will collaborate in the maintenance of a botanical path and cleaning the banks of the little Lombra river. It will be possible to go to an open-air swimming pool and to "dancing-evenings" and popular Festivals organised by the town in June-July.

Project: Ottaviano is a small town placed close to the volcano Vesuvio, and located inside the National Park of Vesuvio. Ottaviano is dated at the '700, and still now it is possible to visit the wonderful castle placed in the rich nature that characterises the area. Volunteers will be involved in a project that has the finality to safeguard a lava-flow, interesting for the geological characters. Participants will also renovate old paths and safeguard the area from the danger of fires. They will also take a census of vines and restore an old structure used to conserve the natural products.

Leg23 Otranto (Le) Puglia 10/07/06 25/07/06 ENVI 12
Project: Otranto, the most eastern site in Italy, is one of the most interesting place in the Puglia region for its artistic and historical testimonies. It’s also important and important environmental area and it has been included in the new Regional Park of Otranto- S.Maria di Leuca Coast. Near Otranto there is a marvellous “Masseria”, old villa used as farm in the ancient time. It was built the 14th century and rebuilt in 19th century with a complex hydraulic system, located in the middle of a Roman inhabited. Nearby there are an old Tower, a Church and a Monastery (15th century) of Greek-Italian priests. Volunteers will work in the cleaning up of the old path, removing infesting plants and rebuilding the typical “dry-wall”. Moreover, they will restore the old paving of the farm, mainly taking care of the well-waters.

Leg24 Airola (Bn) Campania 15/07/06 01/08/06 ENVI 15
Project: The workcamp aims to the restoration and maintenance of several caves situated inside Taburno-Camposauro Park, in the Caudina Valley. In the past years international volunteers have restored a footpath’s net which connects the most interested caves in the area, often abandoned and with obstructed entrances by infested plants. The final objective of the project is to register all the caves of the Park and make trekking paths between them to can be visited by the local community and tourists. The local club of Legambiente has already organised some excursions, and around 1000 students of the area has visited these caves. For the first week of the camp, volunteers will restore the footpaths of the Taburno caves and in the second week they will create a new path next to Isclero river.

Leg25 Bienno and Campolungo (Bs) Lombardia 15/07/06 29/07/06 ENVI 15
Project: Bienno, one of most beautiful Italian villages, was built up at the medieval age and is located in Valcamonica, a valley in the northern part of Brescia district, on the slopes of the Alps at 500 m above sea level. This village is well known for the old tradition of iron manufacture and also for the characteristic historic center called "borgo". Campolungo is approximately 1 hour and a half from the outskirts of Bienno and it’s very interesting from the environmental point of view and contains visible traces of the Roman copper and iron manufacturing industry. For the first part of the workcamp, volunteers will be hosted in a mountain refuge, at 1.500 metres a. s. l. inside Adamello Park, a protected area 51.000 hectares large. The work will include the maintenance of footpaths. For the second part of the camp they will be hosted by local families in the village, making similar activities. Near to the refuge there is a freshwater stream where it is possible for
the more courageous to bath!

Leg26 Navelli (Aq) Abruzzo 15/07/06 30/07/06 ENVI 15
Project: Navelli is a beautiful village situated on a hill up to the Valley of Campo Imperatore, in the Abruzzo Apennines mountains, in the centre of Italy. For many years it has been an important commercial and productive centre, mainly for the saffron, his most famous and prestigious product, used since 3500 years ago as a medicine and as spice in the kitchen. From this little violet flower, Navelli has prospered till today and the refined architecture of its historic centre is a testimony of this richness. Volunteers will work on the maintenance of some paths around the area and in the cleaning of a pine-wood where an important local festival will take place during the camp.

Project: Valletta Park is an agricultural and wooded area, situated on the way from Bergamo to Como. It is extremely important because situated next to the area called “Brianza Lecchese”, that is heavily populated. Its name has origin from the folk tradition, due to the canal in the north-west side, and due to the characteristics of depressed area comparing to the surrounding valleys. All the area is covered by a 16 kilometers long cycle-pedestrian route, which allows visitors to appreciate the interesting peculiarities of nature and landscape, that makes the valley a protected area. Volunteers will work in the restoration and maintenance of pathways and some green areas into the Park, in collaboration with volunteers from a local organization, “Amici della Valletta”, active in this territory since many years.

Leg28 Giffoni Valle Piana (Sa) Campania 16/07/06 30/07/06 ENVI 10
Project: Giffoni is a pleasant village placed inside the regional park ”Monti Picentini”, only 20km from Salerno and 25km from Paestum. The park is covered of woods and there are some areas from which was extracted a particular material used in medicine. Legambiente local group works to restore, safeguard and revaluate the area. Volunteers will collaborated in the maintenance and restoration of the protected area “Casa Natura” and in the cleaning up of Carborana Sanctuary reserve. Moreover they will also spend some working time in the maintenance of the Secco river (dry river) and the famous archaeological area of Paestum, 30Km far away, mainly cleaning up its pine-wood by the seaside.
During the camp, Giffoni will host the famous “Giffoni Film Festival” and volunteers will have the opportunity to assist in their free time. Some visits to naturalistic and archaeological sites are also planed.

Leg29 Carenno (Lc) Lombardia 16/07/05 29/07/05 TEEN/ENVI 9 (+ 7 it)
Project: Carenno is a tourist centre situated in San Martino valley, south-east of Lecco, on a plain at 635 metres over sea level, surrounded by mountains rich in vegetation, pre-alpine flora and dolomite rocks. The village has a wonderful view on west, like on a balcony, over Adda river, Brianza lakes and the plains of Milano with Monte Rosa on background. Carenno has also interesting historical and artistic evidences, and it’s also possible to visit other interesting cities such as Lecco, Bergamo and Milano in the nearby. On this territory is very active the Comunità Montana Valle San Martino (local bureau for mountains), which will support volunteers during the works for the maintenance of the mountainous area of Carenno and the park.

Leg30 Alpe Dosso (So) Lombardia 16/07/06 29/07/06 ENVI 12
Project: the mountains called Orobie represent the first alpine chain on the north of Lombardia region, and are considerated an important naturalistic patrimony of the area.. There are many signs showing us the importance of these mountains in the past because of trade traffic and agricultural activities. The southern side has got valleys with numerous ramifications, while the northern side is steeper and it develops in deep valleys, in the direction of Adda river. Volunteers will be hosted for the first two days at the village Delebio, the last one before the Orobie mountains. Afterwards, they will reach by walk (about 2 hours) the mountain refuge Alpe Dosso, situated at 1.500 a.s.l., where they will stay and work for the rest of the camp. Volunteers will make interventions along the footpaths of the park, besides the cleaning and the maintenance of pasture lands, and the mountain refuge itself. Due to the nature of the camp taking place on mountains, volunteers must
to be ready for some trekking.

Project: The local park “Rile Tenore Olona” is characterized by the typical vegetation of Lombard moorland, in the north of the region. This area of 14 kilometers square is crossed by many watercourses being Olona river the main one. History, tradition and culture complete the rich description of the territory in which it is located. The historical and naturalistic routes are the best outlet of an area with important architectural presences from the medieval age to the renaissance. The relationship between history and nature is the main attraction for the area and is becoming a tool for the revaluation. Volunteers will work mainly on the maintenance and the development of the Park’s paths’ net.

Leg32 Colere (Bg) Lombardia 17/07/06 31/07/06 ENVI 16
Project: Colere is a small village situated in the slope of Presolana mountain, next to the Valley “Val di Scalve”, an evocative atmosphere of unique beauty. It’s a typical place for practicing winter sports and for passing relaxed summer holidays. Its morphologic particularities make this locality one of the more interesting centers of the “Orobic alpine chain”. It has had mines of iron, lead and zinc since the roman age, which represented a fundamental economic resource for the area. The work will consist in the maintenance and cleaning up of public areas and the footpaths of the park “Orobie Bergamaschi”, where Colere is situated. However, an expert naturalist will coordinate and guide volunteers in the creation of a census of the rufa ants living in this area, which are very important for the ecosystem of the forest. During the workcamp, there will take place a two-days local festival which will involve the people from the surroundings and which volunteers will take
part. This workcamp is situated in a wonderful landscape and the activities are very interested, but due to the special characteristics of the project (working timetable flexible and various tasks), volunteers are requested to be very motivated and with adaptable spirit.

Project: Dalmine is 6 miles far away from Bergamo, the main town of the district, and 20 miles from Milan. This village was created around 12 centuries ago. There are many churches with very important sculptures and paintings from an historical and artistic point of view and there are still many ancient buildings. There are also two museums dedicated to the Italian renaissance. The "Parco del Brembo" is a park quite large in the area and well equipped. Volunteers will work in this green area cleaning up and doing ordinary activities like: cutting grass, building up benches and tables. The footpath along the river BREMBO will be cleaned. Signposts and fences will be placed.

Project: Boltiere is 10 miles far away from Bergamo, the main town of the district, and is situated inside the park called "Parco del Brembo". The village is located on the left bank of the river and is characterized by farmsteads and numerous elegant houses typical from the 17th century. Boltiere was a Bergamo historical gate and the city center was built up on the main road that during middle age was used to get to Bergamo itself. Volunteers will work in the local park cleaning up and doing ordinary maintenance activities like: cutting grass, building benches and tables. The footpath along the river Brembo will be cleaned. Signposts and fences will be placed.

Project: Lenna is a little village of 700 inhabitants situated 30 miles far away from Bergamo, the main town of the discrict. Lenna is located in the valley called Brembana, one of the most important valleys in the area. Volunteers will collaborated in the cleaning up and the maintenance of public areas and the paths of the Park. During the workcamp for two days will be held a very big festival with events and initiatives involving people of the village anche of the valley. During the workcamp, there will take place a two-days local festival which will involve the people from the surroundings and which volunteers will take part. This workcamp is situated in a wonderful landscape and the activities are very interested, but due to the special characteristics of the project (working timetable flexible and various tasks), volunteers are requested to be very motivated and with adaptable spirit.

Project: The project will take place in three different small villages, all situated inside the park: Madone, Filago and Osio Sotto. Madone and Filago are little villages 5 miles away from Bergamo, that is the main town of the district and it is easily reachable by bus. They are characterized by having a city centre of rural houses made of stones taken from the near river Brembo. Moreover, in Bonate Sotto, it’s located the S. Giulia's church, and important historic heritage dated around 1130. Local inhabitants still practice a very traditional sport similar to tennis called “Palla Tamburello”: for each team there are 5 people. Volunteers will work 3 or 4 days in each locality cleaning up and doing ordinary and activities like: cutting grass, build up benches and tables. The footpath along the river BREMBO will be cleaned. Signposts and fences will be placed.

Leg38 Raiano (Aq) Abruzzo 17/07/05 30/07/05 ENVI 13
Project: Raiano is situated at Peligna’s Valley, on the sheep track from Celano (in Abruzzo) to Foggia (in Puglia region) a very important transhumance way. This position has influenced Raiano since its origins, transforming it into an active centre; there are also some Medieval churches testifying its peculiar artistic liveliness. The village is known since XVII° century; it has a nice, wild, uncontaminated and attractive appearance. In the XVI century it was destroyed and rebuilt in the valley; but there are still some ruins on the hills around. In Raiano’s area there are several protected areas: the Natural Reserve of Gole di San Venanzio (San Venanzio Gorges), near to the village, is fascinated because of its beautiful landscapes and because it has rare examples of flora and fauna. The hermitage of San Venanzio is situated in this solitude, between Mentino and Urano mountains, near to Aterno river. The workcamp consists in restoring some paths that cross different
interesting areas, abandoned in the last years: cleaning the green areas and realising wood furnishing.

Leg39 Gorno (Bg) Lombardia 17/07/06 31/07/06 ENVI 12
Project: Gorno is a typical mountain village of 1800 inhabitants, situated at 750 meters a.s.l., and 30 km far away from Bergamo, the main city of the district. This center was very important in the industry history due to its lead and zinc mines, activity that ended in the ' 700. Moreover, Gorno is situated in an enviable natural context and offers the possibility to do fascinating trekking. The work will consist in the maintenance and cleaning up of public areas and the footpaths of the park “Orobie Bergamaschi”, where Gorno is situated. However, an expert naturalist will coordinate and guide volunteers in the creation of a census of a variety of amphibious that lives in the area. During the workcamp, there will take place a two-days local festival which will involve the people from the surroundings and which volunteers will take part. This workcamp is situated in a wonderful landscape and the activities are very interested, but due to the special characteristics of
the project (working timetable flexible and various tasks), volunteers are requested to be very motivated and with adaptable spirit.

Leg40 Genova-Murta (Ge) Liguria 18/07/06 31/07/06 ENVI/SOCI 12
The workcamp will take place in Murta , a small town few minutes far from Genoa centre. The workcamp will be held inside the only public mental centre of Liguria. Here are regularly hosted about 15 patients besides other 20 people who make daily use of the centre services. The centre has at its disposal a quite big portion of land (originally park of a nineteenth century manor-house). Among the people who daily frequent the centre, there are enough resources to hold a small horticultural activity on the area already tilled. Volunteers will be involved in maintenance and cleaning up of the rest of the park in order to regain some uncultivated areas. A small part of the park will be used as garden for the centre guests and furnished with benches and tables

Leg41 Roscigno (Sa) Campania 19/07/06 02/08/06 RENO/ENVI 15
Project: Roscigno is a small village situated inside the Cilento Park, which still conserves many archaeological sites testimony of the ancient communities presences, which origins are dated on the V century b.C. Since several years it has hosted international voluntary workcamps directed to the creation of a footpath called “Sulla via dei Lucani” (on the Lucan’s way) which crosses the park. The main objective of this path is the valorisation of the historical, environmental and archaeological resources and the promotion of the typical products and traditions of this area. Volunteers will work on the restoration of a picnic area situated along the path when it crosses the village Sant’Elia, where is still possible to see the ruins of a small chapel dedicated to the patron saint.

Leg42 Abbateggio (Pe) Abruzzo 20/07/06 02/08/06 ARCH/ENVI 15
Project: Abbateggio is a small rural village situated in the National Park of Majella, a splendid protected area very important from the naturalistic point of view. It’s placed in the centre of Italy about 2 hours far away from Rome. The work will take place in the Sant’Agata fountain, ancient sacred place where the local women went to pry for having milk for their new-born children. The area was very frequented by the neighboured communities and it seems there was a particular ritual women made during the pilgrimages. Volunteers will clean up the area and the access path, and will collaborate to some archaeological excavations together to the specialist from the “Museum of Abruzzo population” of Pescara. They will have the opportunity to discover the traditions of this beautiful area.

Leg43 Pamparato (Cn) 21/07/2006 04/08/2006 ENVI 15
Project: The workcamp will be hosted in Pamparato, a small village situated in the north West of Piemonte region. Volunteers will be involved in cleaning, restoring and maintaining activities of some paths that connects Pamparato and the near woods and peaks and in the retraining of the Park of the Cordero Castle of Pamparato. They will be guided by experts during the activities and will take part to lessons about the naturalistic engineering interventions. Furthermore volunteers will have the opportunity to participate by turns, in the baroque musical and cultural festival “Festival dei Saraceni" placed in those dates in Pamparato. There will be organized some naturalistic excursions to discover the particularities of the Maritimes and Ligurian Alps and two days of the workcamp volunteers will have the opportunity to visit the famous Vicoforte sanctuary with the biggest European elliptic cupola, the caves of Bossea and the tradition production of cheese in Casotto
Valley.

Leg44 Seveso (Mi) Lombardia 22/07/05 05/08/05 ENVI 15
Project: Fosso del Ronchetto is situated on the border of a Regional park, Parco delle Groane, 20 km far from Milan. It’s a 8 hectares green area in Seveso, a town of 19.000 inhabitants, 210 metres a.s.l.. The woodland is characterized by false acacias, oaks, chestnut-trees, elms and cherry-trees. The typical fauna you can find here is the dormouse, the squirrel and lots of birds like the woodpecker, the owl and the titmouse. In a humid site, recreated in a small area of the oasis, there are tritons, frogs and toads. Fosso del Ronchetto, with its footpaths, is a useful link between the centre of Seveso and its hill, Altopiano di Seveso and Groane’s park. The main activities will be the restoration and the maintenance of the footpaths, the cleaning of the area and the care of the pond. The same works may be done in other green areas in Seveso, near Fosso del Ronchetto.

Leg45 Capo di Ponte (BS) Lombardia 22/07/06 06/08/06 ENVI 10
Project: Capo di Ponte is a little village of 2,500 inhabitants. It is situated in Vallecamonica, north of Iseo Lake, at about 80 kilometres from Brescia. It is the first Italian site to be declared "Human Heritage" by the Unesco thanks to the presence of the highest concentration of European prehistoric rocky engravings. On its territory we can find the National Park of rock art of Naquane, the National Park of the Stone of Cemmo, the Municipal Park of Seradina and Bedolina, along with many others areas of archaeological interest, two Romanesque churches and also two medieval little villages (Cemmo and Pescarzo). Project: The valley where the workcamp will take place is in the northern part of Maggiore Lake, famous for its tourist and environmental attractions. The valley goes up until the Swiss border. The valley has beautiful landscapes, one of the best in the Lombard Pre-Alps, in a mainly mountainous area, even if by the lake. The area is characterized by large broadleaf woods, especially chestnut and beeches, and hosts a great number of animals, as well as traditional mountain farms and villages. You can often see deer, boars, foxes, badgers and chamoises. The volunteers will help the local community in the maintenance of the nearby mountain paths

Project: Pezzolo is small village situated in Messina district, in the island of Sicily. It was born as a farmhouse in the XIV° century, but firsts signs of human presence in the area go back to Saracen invasion. The area around is ploughed by a river, which creates an atmosphere of suggestive beauty and naturalistic interest. Volunteers will work at revaluation and cleaning of ancient paths that connect the river to the closes villages and springs/fountains.

Project: Lodi is situated on a rise that since ancient times dominated the middle stretch of Adda River. It was founded on 1158, and it has always been a witness of important historic national events. The charm of Lodi’s history remains visible at the old center of the town with its important monuments. It is also a green town and combines the beautiful river landscape with old memories like the battle on its bridge where, in 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte started to become famous. Volunteers will restore and maintain the big wood in the plain, they will clean its banks and some green areas of Lodi. Volunteers must know to ride bicycle as they will go to the working area with them.

Leg49 Campsirago (LC) Lombardia 23/07/06 05/08/06 TEEN/ENVI 9 (+ 7 it)
Project: S. Genesio Park is in a hilly and mountainous area placed in the southern part of Lecco. The hills contain interesting ancient rural villages, a lot of which are depopulated. One of these is the Medieval village of Campsirago, where Legambiente has a “Permanent Centre for Voluntary Service and Environmental Education”. Thanks to the several activities linked to the care of the environment, such as management of natural areas, environmental promotion and education in schools, long term international volunteers' projects, Campsirago became a central pole for environmental initiatives in Lecco district. During the camp the work will consist in the maintenance of mule tracks of the Brianza mountain and cleaning the rivers that cross the near areas. Volunteers will also be involved in interventions of cleaning, restoring and giving value to the areas all around the Brianza mountain.

Project: Camparada is a little village, situated at about 25 km in the North-East of Milan. Though it is very close to a great urban area, this territory is pleasant for the proximity of the first undulated hill before the region called “Brianza”, that witness the ancient glaciations. A new park is been created which includes three Municipalities: Arcore, Camparada and Usmate Velate. This park wants to become a place where experimenting collective management of a natural environment. Volunteers will collaborate in the maintenance of footpaths and re-naturalized areas, and will also contribute to the restoration of ancient walls and cobbled paving.

Leg51 Valverde (Pv) Lombardia 24/07/06 06/08/06 ENVI/FEST 12
Project: Valverde is a little village of few hundreds of people on the Appennino Pavese mountains, at about 800 m of altitude, far from Milan about 80 km. During the summer, many turists from the plain come to the 14 hamlets, here and there between Nizza Valley and Tidone Valley of Valverde. This Voluntary Environmental Camp will be the third in Valverde, because of the choice taken by the Commune: to promote the development of the territory in a sustainable way. Volunteers will work on the maintenance of paths and wood of the local park, helping the local ERSAF staff of “Body for the Service to Agricolture and Forests”, and they will contribute to the preparation of the squares for shows and cultural events of “Valverde Summer”

Leg52 Rifugio Cascina le Cave (Po) Toscana 24/07/06 08/08/06 ENVI 20
Project: Cascina le Cave mountain refugee is situated in Cantagallo municipality, into the Natural Reserve Acquerino-Cantagallo, a protected area between Prato and Pistoia provinces. It is characterised by mountain landscape, typical of the Tuscany Apennines, from 300 till 1100mt high. The woods are basically of chestnut-trees and beech-trees. The Reserve has an important fauna as wolves and wild cats, disappeared in the most part of the Italian forests. Volunteers will renovate a botanical path that goes to Cascina le Cave and another one around Cantagallo village. Cascina le Cave is available only from Cantagallo through a path inside the Reserve on 30 minutes by walk. The camp is particularly indicated to volunteers who like calmness and environmental silent.

Project: Andrate is a small municipality situated at 700 a.s.l., over the area called Serra Morenica, a geological patrimony unique in Italy. The workcamp aims to the restoration of the ancient footpaths’ net of the area and is included in the bigger campaign called “Andrate, the territory’s art”, that tries to safeguard the artistic and tradition patrimony of the area. Volunteers will collaborated to the maintenance, cleaning up and restoration of the paths. Moreover they will have the opportunity to discover the local context: traditions, typical food products, cultural fest, local arts… Naturalistic and artistic excursions to the most famous places in the area are foreseen during the workcamp (Monte Bianco, Monterosa, etc… together to experts).

Project: Cittaducale is a small city situated in the hill “Cerreto Piano”, by the river Velino, one hour and a half North Est of Rome. This splendid mediaeval fortress was built up by the Roman empire on the century II b.C., afterwards destroyed by the barbarians invasions and then restructured out of medieval architectonic influences from Tuscany, France and the classic period. There are several important archaeological ruins: roman sumptuous houses, public bath. Volunteers will clean up the archaeological area, removing the infesting plants and bushes to let the better vision of the area. Moreover, volunteers will help the local club of Legambiente to organise the festival “Angioino August”.

Project: Adda Nord Park is located on a stretch of the Adda river which crosses the plain, south of Lake Como. Villa D'Adda is located in one of the most precious areas of landscape interest. The most interesting areas from a naturalistic point of view are the wet marshes with reed thickets in Torre island and in Serragio island in Brivio. Volunteers, who will stay in a recreative centre by the river where it will be possible to use a swimming pool, will work on pedestrian walks and in the ordinary maintenance of the surrounding areas.

Project: This camp has been organised since 2001 in the reserve called "Monte San Giacomo", which is managed by Legambiente. It's a place of remarkable importance because its nature and its historic ruins from the middle age. Besides, it was a holy place for the Celtic civilitation: a Nemeton (holy wood). Volunteers will work in the maintenance of footpaths, cleaning from rubbish and from weeds the area of Monte San Giacomo and the sources of the Donda torrent. As in the previous experiences, volunteers will be lodged in the houses of the Cuirone inhabitants or in a scool-gym and will meet toogether for the meals in a equipped structure.

Project: Brescia is a 200.000 inhabitants town, 20 km far from Garda lake and less than an hour by train far from Milan and Verona. The natural position, at the beginning of three mountain valleys and at the bottom of a little hill now dominated by a beautiful Renaissance castle, was considered strategic since Gaul’s period (VI century b.C.): the first important archaeological witnessing refers to this age. Brescia’s long history appears in a very stratified town centre, rich in important architecture evidences going from roman period to Venetian Reinassance through the middle ages. Brescia is embraced on a system of hills now protected by the foundation of a natural park. Inside this park volunteers will be accommodated and will work on the maintenance of some pathways and a woody hill area. The project will be carried on in cooperation with others local environmental association.

Project: Valtellina has landscapes with different heights. The bottom of the valley is populated: the workcamp residence is located on a cycle-pedestrian route, which joins Tirano’s centre (in 3 kilometres - 9.000 inhabitants) and cross an agricultural area. In a few kilometres there are little villages with medieval churches and areas. From Tirano the “Retica railway” begins, climbs up on the Bernina mountains and gets to Engadina, in Switzerland. Bormio (35 kilometres) is a tourist place with thermal baths and interesting footpaths in Stelvio National Park. Volunteers will be involved in the cleaning of the humid area of the natural area “Le Piane” of Lovere, which is close to the building where the volunteers will sleep, that is run by Legambiente. Moreover volunteers will be involved in other interventions of environmental maintenance in the surrounding areas.

Project: Serina is a tourist village placed in the valley with the homonymous name (Val Serina). The “entrance” of this valley is particular: there are high rocky walls on both sides called “Orridi” offering an unusual and fascinating natural appearance. There are also many water sources known at national level. The work project is about the cleaning up and the ordinary maintenance of public areas inside and outside the village. Besides volunteers will collaborated to the organisation of a festival called “Festa della Montagna”, a kind of mountain festival with activities and initiatives addressed to the tourists and children. This workcamp is situated in a wonderful landscape and the activities are very interested, but due to the special characteristics of the project (working timetable flexible and various tasks), volunteers are requested to be very motivated and with adaptable spirit.

Project: Ancipa lake is situated 5 km far from Troina village, very close to Nebrodi Mountain Park. The lake was created on the fifties from Troina river, for hydroelectric aims. The lake is in a wonderful mountain scenery (944m altitude, the highest artificial lake of Sicily) and it has an environmental interest because of its fauna and flora species. Lat year Legambiente has acquired the management of a 17ha forest by the lakeshore, and for the third time an international workcamp will take place in this area. Volunteers will work in the maintenance and the renovation of a suggestive path around the lake and will collaborate in the maintenance of a suburban park with the construction of benches and tables for public use.

Project: Castel San Lorenzo is a small village located in the National Park of Cilento e Vallo di Diano, 70 km far from Salerno, where many workcamps have been organised in the past years. Close to this area there are interesting localities like Paestum, known for the archaeological ruins, the caves of Castelcivita, the ancient church of Padula, etc… In Castel San Lorenzo is possible to visit the Agriculture Museum, the Historical Centre, the wool factory Cooperativa Val Calore. Volunteers will work in a very particular scenery really interesting for the natural characters and the richness of views. In this area still lives the otter. The working program includes the maintenance of old paths along the banks of the river Calore, and the realisation of emergency signs for the area.

Project: The Park where volunteers will work is formed by Curone’s stream valley, Montevecchia’s hill and the plain crossed by Molgora’s stream. It is a wooden area with natural landscapes which have been changed by men. The Park is not only a nature reserve, but a very diversified zone where, besides areas of great environmental interest, there are also urban centers, productive settlements, areas dedicated to agriculture and breeding, and architectural monuments of great artistic and cultural value. The area is also famous for the growing of pot herbs and for its wines. Volunteers will work at the environmental maintenance of the meadows of the park, that need to be cut periodically to preserve their richness in flora; moreover volunteers will take care of the ordinary maintenance of pathways, dedicating a special attention to restore the broken or missing signs, and the maintenance of evidences of the rural landscape.

Leg67 Prim’Alpe-Canzo (Co) Lombardia 13/08/06 26/08/06 TEEN/ENVI 9 (+ 5 it)
Project: Prim’Alpe is a village situated in the valley of torrent Ravella, at 725 meters a.s.l., in the heart of the State property Forest of Corni di Canzo and near the Natural Reserve Sasso Malascarpa. It's surrounded by meadows for pasture and forests with numerous arboreal species. Until 50 years ago the valley was populated by families around three main poles: Prim'Alpe, Second'Alpe and Terz'Alpe, all of the three built along the ancient mule-track that climbs up from the Gajum Sources. Prim'Alpe was the largest and more densely populated of the three. The economy of the valley depended mostly on the mountain cultivations (rye, corn...) and especially on the breeding of bovines, ovines, goats and pigs. On the other hand the Natural Reserve Sasso Malascarpa is one of the most interesting areas in Lombardia under the geologic, geomorphologic, and palaeontologic point of view. Volunteers, in collaboration with Meta cooperative Meta and Ersaf, will work at the
maintenance of pathways and natural areas, and at the maintenance of evidences of the rural landscape.

Leg68 Bosio (Al) Piemonte 14/08/06 25/08/06 ENVI 12
Project: workcamp will take place next to the Benedicta Sanctuary surrounded by the nature of the Capanne Marcarolo Regional Park. Work consists in the maintenance of the paths around the structure where volunteers will be hosted. Volunteers will act in this contest to improve the park and will have the chance to discover the natural surroundings and the social realities, and will give the opportunity to live a full immersion in the nature even because the accomodation has no electricity, no potable water (there is a potable spring 2km away), mobile phones don't work. The camp is addressed to volunteers who really love contact with nature. The area of the Park is dominated by the massive pyramid of Tobbio Mont, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Ligurian Gulf, situated at less than 10 km. The area is particularly interesting for the abundance of watercourses and of wetlands.

Leg69 Mezzanego (Ge) Liguria 17/08/06 28/08/06 ENVI 12
Project: Aveto’s Park is an interesting protected area formed by 3 valleys (Val d'Aveto, Valle Sturla e Val Graveglia), each of them characterised by unique elements and dominated by the picks of the Ligurian Apennine (from 1600 to 1800 meters a.s.l.). The workcamp aims to restore a path which crosses the region from ventimiglia, the French border, to La Spezia. This path marks the separation between the coast and the mountains, the two characteristic symbols of the Ligurian region. Volunteers will work on the restoration of some parts of this path together to the staff of the Park. They will be hosted in the refuge Passo del Bocco, situated at 965 meters a.s.l. and 25 km far away from the sea, so they will live a “full immersion” park experience.

Project: Antrodoco is a small village situated near the Apennines mountains, in the centre of Italy, two hours away from Rome. It’s a beautiful area traditionally based in an agricultural and sheep-rearing economy. Volunteers will work in environmental restoration activities and in the maintenance of the mountain footpaths of the Rocca di Corno and Piscignola. They will be involve in working activities during the morning and in the afternoon volunteers will have the opportunity to discover the local area and community through excursions and meetings. However in the evenings they will help the local club of Legambiente in organising the festival “Antrodocano August”.

Leg71 Galbiate (Lc) Lombardia 20/08/06 02/09/06 TEEN/ENVI 9 Int + 5It
Project: Monte Barro (986 m above sea level) is a solitary mountain in the hilly area between the region called Brianza and Lecco, very close to Como Lake. Very particular is the view that volunteers can admire from their accommodation almost on top of the mountain; it is possible to admire a very large landscape with pre-alpine and Brianza lakes, the city of Lecco, the Grigne massif and Corni di Canzo massif. There are also interesting geological peculiarities and several precious flora and fauna species. In Monte Barro Park is possible to make nice walks along different pathways, to visit an archaeological area and a bird-watching station. Volunteers will mainly work in the botanical reserve of the top of the mountain, removing manually the undesired plants, carrying on the studies of a quadrennial project promoted by the Park in recent years with the support of European Union (Life Project). Walking along the pathways of the mountain, volunteers will also work on the
environmental maintenance of the area nearby the accommodation building, and to restore the paths where needed.

Project: The Pian di Spagna-Mezzola Lake is an area mentioned among wetlands of international interest by the convention signed in Ramsar (Iran) in 1971. This zone was formed by the gradual deposit of mud and drifts transported by Adda river. This half-marshy area is mainly covered with thick beds of reeds and is the habitat of many animals and plants. It’s very important, in particular for the presence of several species of birds, because is the crossroads for important migration routes. Volunteers will help the staff of the reserve in the increase in value of various environments by preventing from the invasion of weeds; they will work to the maintenance of the paths, cleaning up etc..

Leg73 Cinque Terre (Sp) Liguria 27/08/06 08/09/06 ENVI 12
Project: Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is a group of five villages between the sea and the mountains formed by spectacular terraces above the sea, made by kilometres of small dry stone-walls and cultivated with olive-trees and vine-trees. The terraces are created from the sea level till 700 metres high, and in the last years have suffered an important neglect by local people. Since six years Legambiente is collaborating with the Park administration organising volunteer projects for the safeguard of the area. The National Park of Cinque Terre has environmental and cultural characteristics to be re-valued and preserved, and for this reason is included in the list of Unesco environmental and culture patrimonies. Volunteers will be involved in activities for the cleaning and maintenance of paths and terraces.

Leg74 Cisliano (Mi) Lombardia 27/08/06 10/09/06 ENVI 12
Project: Forestina farm is located between Cisliano and Corbetta, 20 km far away from Milan, in the Po river valley, inside one of the major naturalistic area of South Milan Agricultural Park, marked with the presence of a thick net of water springs. This is an area where a strong rural economy still exists with the presence of many original farms and mills from the XVIII and XIX centuries, bridges, irrigation channels as well as Cistercian Abbeys and many historical-artistic monuments like the Visconti-Sforza castles (14-15th century) with their noble country houses. An acclimatizing station for night raptorial has been placed in the wood thanks to a convention signed with the Italian Association for Bird Protection (LIPU). Workcamp activities will be the renovation and cleanness of environmental areas and pathways, naturalistic investigation, biological agriculture, manual collection… The camp also will include interventions for improving the wood surface to protect
autochthon species.

Leg75 Venezia (Ve) Veneto 01/09/06 14/09/06 ENVI 15
Project: The workcamp will take place in Certosa island, in the Park of the North Lagoon of Venice. The island has been always used for military purposes until 1950, when it has been progressively abandoned. Finally in 1985 it was changed in an urban park with the aid of S. Andrea Committee in order to use it for civil aims and to restore the castle and the S. Andrea Island. Legambiente is collaborating with the committee for the cleaning and maintenance of the green area. Volunteers will be involved especially in the renovation and cleaning of paths and of the interested environmental areas for a future renovation of its agricultural use. Furthermore the work foresees the restoration of an ancient military fortress “Forte di S. Andrea” for its future reused.

Project: Montevecchio is a small mining village situated 20 km far away from the Green Coast, one of the most charming coast of Sardinia: the reserve of "Monte Arcuentu-Dune di Piscinas”. The area is very interesting from the zoologist point of view, particularly for the presence of the Sardinian deer and the “Caretta caretta” turtle. Volunteers will collaborated in several activities: cleaning of the beach, maintenance of a naturalistic footpath, position of signs, monitoring of the presence of the Sardinian deer, fire prevention and other environmental restoration activities. There will be also small works to restore the hosting structure.

Leg77 Roncade (Tv) Veneto 16/09/06 30/09/06 ENVI 12
Project: Roncade is a big centre located in the area of the town of Treviso, few km far from Padova and Venezia. The village is crossed by two rivers (the Sile and the Musestre). Here Legambiente collaborates with the local council for the realization of a nature trail for bikes and excursionists on the banks of the river Musestre. Volunteers will cleaning the natural trail removing vegetation and rubbish. Furthermore, the volunteers will participate at the organization of “Clean up the world", a worldwide voluntary one-day campaign for the environmental recovering and for raising sensitiveness about ecological themes.

Leg78 Isola Dovarese (Cr) Lombardia 16/09/06 30/09/06 ENVI 12
Project: Isola Dovarese is a very small but lively village set on the banks of the river Oglio, in the heart of the biggest countryside all over Northern Italy. The village is situated in middle of the Park Oglio, a natural reserve that offers the chance to experience the local traditions and typical activities of the area. Volunteers will contribute to some of these activities with their work: cleaning up and waste-picking of the banks, creation of “green places” for public use, animal-watching and walks in the nature with experts. Moreover, volunteer will have the opportunity to meet and get integrated with the local community and discover local Italian life in this environmental area.

Leg79 Milano (Mi) Lombardia 24/09/06 07/10/06 ENVI 12
Project: The work camp is organized by CFU, Urban Forest Center, in collaboration with Legambiente Lombardia. CFU takes care of “Bosco in città” and “Parco delle Cave”, two public parks in Milan. This camp is for those volunteers who want to know more about urban parks in Milan which are situated inside the city but in natural and agricultural contexts. The park is made up of 110 hectares of woods, meadows, watercourses and it has several footpaths. It is located 40 minutes by bus from the center of Milan. Volunteers will be engaged in the maintenance/cleaning of the paths of the park and the creation/maintenance of several objects like: wastebaskets for rubbish, wood or metal palings, little bridges. The job will be 6 hours a day, from Monday to Friday

Leg80 Torri Superiore (Im) Liguria 18/11/06 02/12/06 ENVI 15
Project: Torri Superiore is a small medieval village dated at the XII century and situated in Val Bevera, a small valley characterised by the cultivation of olives trees and mimosa plants, located close to the coast and to the border with France. Since 1989 the Cultural Association “Torri Superiore” has been developing a project to restore the wonderful Medieval village to transform it in an ecological, co-operative village and a centre of cultural research. The Association started to organise workcamps with Legambiente in the 1992 and all the 19 groups of volunteers have been involved in the maintenance of the old houses, and the abandoned building that now are used again. From 1997 13 restructured houses have been used and a big part of the cultural centre. The place will be used for cultural activities as courses of biological agriculture, ceramics, shiatsu…, and also it will be open for trekking excursions. Torri Superiore is member of GEN-Europe (Global eco-village
network) and RIVE ( Italian eco-village network). In this camp volunteers will help in the restoration of a path in a close village called Trucco and in the maintenance of the fountain “Balestra” (famous for the quantity and quality of its water) and the water canals used for the farmers. Leg81 Brivio (LC) Lombardia 11/02/07 24/02/07 ENVI 10
Project: S. Genesio Park is in a hilly and mountainous area placed in the southern part of Lecco. The hills contain interesting ancient rural villages, a lot of which are depopulated. One of these is the Medieval village of Campsirago, where Legambiente has a “Permanent Center for Voluntary Service and Environmental Education”, where volunteers will be hosted. Volunteers will mainly work in the natural reserve called Palude di Brivio, few kilometers far from Campsirago, in one of the most interesting area from the naturalistic and landscape point of view of the whole Parck Adda Nord. The natural reserve Palude di Brivio is in the European list of the Community Important Sites for the conservation of natural habitat and wild fauna and flora spices. During the workcamp we will cut the grass and make maintenance of the footpaths inside the area, moreover we will realize some security corridors in order to protect the wooden buildings from fire.

Leg06 Volvera (TO) Piemonte 24/06/06 08/07/06 AGRI 12
Project: Casacmos is an educational community which tries to help people to become the protagonist of their own future trough the sharing, the temperance and the hosting. Born as an association in the 1999, it has started to collaborated with Libera since 2000 for a Youth project and from that it has born the idea of creating a hosting structure. Different sustainable lifestyles are lived and proposed at the community: energy use, conflict resolution, solidarity hosting (poor people and immigrants from the area), the long life learning… For the first year the community will host a workcamp in collaboration with Libera and Legambiente, aimed at recovering of an estate’s field confiscated to the mafia. The work foresees the cleanness of the area, collection of wood, collection of fruits and possibly the production of homemade jam. Moreover there will be several training moments about the law on the confiscation of properties belonging to mafia criminals, and about the
different between mafia in the North and in the South of Italy. Meetings with the young people from the area will be organised to discuss about the project and for a cultural exchange

Leg19 Castelvetrano (Tp) Sicily 06/07/06 20/07/06 ENVI 12
Project: Castelvetrano is a glorious village with an important testimonial past and many archaeological rests as the marvellous area of Selinunte. On the municipality’s territory it has been instituted the Natural Reserve of “Foce del Belice”, to preserve and safeguard the flora and fauna of this dune area, one of the most beautiful coastline of Sicily. Volunteers will work on the daily activities of “Comunità Casa dei Giovani” (House of youth), who manages since years several lands that have been confiscated to the mafia and produce olive oil called “Libera Terra” (Free Earth). The collaboration between Libera and Legambiente represents an event with a strong symbolic connotation because raise the effort against mafia, towards the culture of legality. The specific work will be on the maintenance and creation of footpaths, continuing the work started by past volunteers. Moreover volunteers will collaborate on the organization and will take part to the “48 hours non stop
for the development and the legality”, a socio-cultural event which commemorates the assassination of a very famous judge involved on the legal proceedings to mafia criminal activities

Project: Mesagne is a big village lying on the plan in the northern area of the Salentina peninsula (southern Italy in front of Albania). Wine yards and olive trees are the landscape of this land, together with historical heritage important sites. The camp is organized in co.operation with Legambiente and Libera association, in support of a young cooperative enterprise which exploit field confiscated to mafia organizations.

Leg54 Giugliano (Na) Campania 26/07/06 08/08/06 ENVI/CONS 12
Project: the camp is combined project with Libera association and “Sole” consortium of municipalities which promotes the new and legal uses of former properties of criminal organizations. I particular the camp will work on the renovation of a park in the town.
Work: maintenance, cleaning and conservation work in a park in Giugliano.
