The Wellcome Trust International Senior Research Fellowships support outstanding researchers, either medically qualified or science graduates, who wish to establish a research career in an Indian, South African, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian or Polish academic institution.
Candidates should normally have between five and ten years' research experience at a postdoctoral level or clinical equivalent and have a substantial record of publications in their chosen area of research in leading international journals.
Candidates need not be nationals of the country where they wish to hold their fellowships.
It is normally expected that candidates will have spent a significant period of their postdoctoral (or equivalent) research career working outside their chosen country. However proposals can also be considered from those who have pursued successful careers entirely in-country.
Applications will be accepted from those who are currently overseas or who have returned to the country where the fellowship will be held.
Applications are particularly encouraged from outstanding scientists working outside their own countries who wish to return home.
The host institution should be able to provide a future career position for the fellow, subject to its usual selection procedure. It is hoped that on completion of his or her award the fellow would be given the opportunity to become a more permanent member of staff.
Any host institution that has not previously received substantial Wellcome Trust funding must be assessed for eligibility to apply and to receive Trust funds. The Trust will inform the applicant of its requirements for this assessment.
All candidates must have a sponsor in their host department who will guarantee space and facilities, and can guarantee that the fellow will be welcomed in the host institution. The sponsor must hold an established post at the host institution (it is not necessary for the sponsor to sign the preliminary application form, but it should be noted that full applications will not be processed unless the sponsor is able to guarantee all these requirements).
Candidates who applied last year and who were not shortlisted to submit a full application are not restricted from re-applying, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria for the scheme.
Candidates may not apply for more than one Wellcome Trust fellowship scheme at any one time.
This is an annual competition.
