Information on the work camp:

PLACE:

The Cesis District is placed in the central part of the historical region of Latvia called Vidzeme.' It is 90 km far from the capital city Riga. The beautiful landscape and relief of the Cesis District is formed by the Vidzeme Highland - hills change with valleys, which have calmly sleeping lakes enclosed by water lilies. The territory of Cesis District is covered by the densest network of the medieval castles in the country of Latvia. Skujenes elementary school is placed 100 km from Riga and some 40 km from the .district center Cesis. The mosaic of waters and
hillocks forms the beautiful landscape of Skujene. In 10 minutes walk you can reach the highest point in the Cesis District - Elku kalns – the place, where its flow begins the longest river in Latvia - River Gauja.

WORK:

Children begin to learn English at the age of 9 and German - at the age of 12. But they haven't got a chance to use their knowledge in practice. The essence of volunteers' work is to make children be interested in learning English and German during their summer holidays. The idea is to make this process exciting and interesting for children, giving a chance for them to improve their knowledge and understanding of languages doing that in informal way - through the games or some other indoor or outdoor activities uniting with environmental education. The main
thing - to encourage the children to express their opinion and not to be afraid of saying something wrong in a language, which is not their mother tongue, as well as make aware of the need to preserve environment

ACCOMODATION:

Volunteers will live in a school building, which is located outside the populated center in a tuck of forests and fields - ecologically clean environment. The place is located in very rural area, so the volunteer must be prepared not to see much crowded places, but rather experience nature of Latvia and life of the local community.
Sleeping is planned in the 2-4 bedded rooms, which are reformed classrooms. There is a computer room with the permanent Internet connection. Toilets in the each floor, showers will be also available.
Staff will prepare vegetarian and vegan food.

FREE TIME ACTIVITIES:

There will be a lot of possibilities for volunteers to spend an unforgettable time and also to relax. Volunteers will have a chance to see and get to know the nearest surroundings, as well as there will be a chance to use school transport to visit some other places in the weekends and evenings. Some meetings with the local young people can be arranged, if volunteers are interested!
There are possibilities to swim in the lakes surrounding the work camp area and hike around.

PARTICIPATION FEE:

The participation fee is Euro 20. Unfortunately we cannot reimburse your traveling costs, but we offer free accommodation, local transportation and unforgettable moments spent in the heart of Latvia.
