Master: PRODUCT DESIGN: DESIGN AND CRAFT INDUSTRY, Isituto Europeo di Design

Istituto Europeo di Design has the pleasure to offer a new interesting master course:
PRODUCT DESIGN: DESIGN AND CRAFT INDUSTRY

This master will help students to understand how to apply design to the craft industry: in fact we know that in many countries there is a huge craft tradition that very often cannot found the right way to internationalizatio n and worldwide markets. In this perspective, the Master course is an occasion for reflection on design projects applied to handicraft production, primarily related to glass, but
also ceramics, textiles and mosaics.

This master will teach how is possible for the craft industry of your country to reach international standards and become therefore a valuable export good, without, of course, losing its specific cultural and traditional peculiarities.

This course will therefore teach how to upgrade the design of craft products and how
to market them. Students will have, after that, the possibility of applying these
valuable know-how in their country of origin. Course duration will be of 8 intensive full months (starting January 24th 2008), the course will be in English at the very promotional price of 9.800 euro; attendance: full-time from Monday to Friday Location will be in our new Venice seat, in a wonderful island whole devoted to IED activities and surrounded by one of the world richest and famous networks of craft industries.

Objective
Participants will be guided towards this new design awareness by close examination of both technical and artistic aspects, supported by a range of cognitive and practical-theoretic al instruments aimed at imparting technical, historical and sociological knowledge, as well as direct experience in design management, versatility, creativity and possible ways of applying this within the industry.

CfP: Integration in Eastern European Societies, Minorities between Nation-States and Europe

Call for Papers

“Integration in Eastern European Societies: Minorities between Nation-States and Europe”
The British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies BASEES
Conference 29-31 May 2008. Fitzwilliam College Cambridge

Numerous studies have focused on ethnic minorities in Eastern Europe mostly emphasising nationalising policies, the problem of external homelands, and effects of EU-enlargement on relations between majorities and minorities. In addition to existing studies this panel seeks to address the efforts taken by CEEC for integrating national minorities in their society. The panel aims at reviewing practices and programmes of social integration since 1989 by implementing Social Integration Programmes of various kinds.

We would like to welcome case-studies investigating the development of state minority integration programmes from various perspectives. The contributions should address the following questions, but are not limited by these:

Which role are state actors, international organisations, local communities and minority groups playing when initiating and executing integration programmes? Which ideological, political or other conceptions stand behind these integration rogrammes?
What is the international and domestic legal basis for minority integration?

What – if any – was the role of minorities in the drafting of these programmes?
Has the original framework of integration programmes changed since its first application
Which problems emerged during implementation?
Can EU conditionality be made responsible for the implementation of integration programmes? What has changed with EU membership?
Potential paper givers should submit an abstract of not more than 250 words, and a brief academic CV, including institutional affiliation and major foci of research until Friday, September 21st to the convenors.

Istanbul Bilgi University European Studies Master Program (with a project)

Started in the year 2000, Bilgi European Studies Master Program, a multi-disciplinary MA programme on the European Union, is entering its eighth year, with over forty graduates and more than fifty students still enrolled. Over the years, well-known academicians from Turkey and Europe have given courses and lectures within the master's degree programme, among them Bernard Steunenberg, Asa Lundgren, Richard Griffiths, Theo Toonen, Julia Rapp, Bas van Bockel, Karen Anderson, Antoaneta Dimitrova, Jean Pirlot, Alexandra Ramos and Andrew Skudder... Today's faculty includes, besides the Program Director Emre Gönen, Yeþim M. Atamer, Ayhan Kaya, Durmuþ Özdemir, Serhat Güvenç, Okutan Nilsson, Aylin Seçkin, Harry-Zachary G.Tzimitras, Esra Arsan, Senem Aydýn and Özge Onursal.

The program has been designed to give students a thorough knowledge of the European Union integration, its institutions, systems, goals and functioning. Turkey, already part of the process of European integration since the signing of the Ankara Agreement in 1963, is now a candidate for membership. The Customs Union between Turkey and the EU, which was completed in 1996, has already made Turkey part of the
European Single Market. The program aims at providing the students with relevant necessary knowledge to handle the prospective situation where Turkey and the EU will become institutional partners.

An information meeting will be held on September 6, 2007, in Dolapdere Campus, with the participation of Ayhan Kaya, Director of European Institute and Emre Gönen, at 18:00 hours. The evaluation examination will take place at the same campus, on September 10, 2007, at 18:30 hours. On-line applications can be made at
http://www.bilgi. edu.tr/pages/ graduates/ euro_stud/

Tuition waivers are available upon request. Deadline: September 7, 2007 (as written on the website). See contact details of the organizers on the webpage, under "Contact".

V::I::P youth volunteering for conflict resolution and peace building - Call for partners - Deadline: 1 September - European Commission Youth in Actio

Dear friends,

the European Volunteer Centre (CEV) is a European network of currently 54 volunteer national and regional development agencies and volunteer centres in 24 European countries representing thousands of volunteers at the local level. CEV channels the collective priorities and concerns of its member organisations to the institutions of the European Union. It also acts as a central forum for the exchange of policy, practice and information on volunteerism. It supports networking among its members and organizes conferences, seminars, workshops and other activities such as research.

CEV is currently developing together with the Southern and Eastern Europe Youth Network (SEEYN) a follow-up project to our YOU::VOL initiative (http://www.cev.be/YOUVOL.htm), a seminar organized in the framework of the EU YOUTH Programme, in March this year in Skopje, Macedonia, focusing on youth volunteering policies in Europe. We would like briefly to share our project idea with all of you and see whether you are interested to be a participants or project partner and provide input to the preparation. As shown in different conflict regions in Europe (and elsewhere in the world), volunteering plays an important societal role in conflict resolution and peace building, as it contributes to (re-)building bonds of trust, mutual understanding and social cohesion in (post-)conflict societies. CEV would like to raise awareness on this topic and give it a higher profile within different stakeholders: volunteer organisations, national policy makers, EU policy makers and donors.
To attain this objective, CEV is planning to apply to the EU Youth Programme Action 3.1. for an event similar to the concept of the YOU::VOL seminar:
A 4-5 days seminar showcasing good practice examples of youth volunteering projects in solving societal conflicts and building peace. The examples presented and discussed will lead to recommendations towards policy makers and donors on how to tap into the potential of volunteering when designing policies in conflict or post-conflict regions. We would be focusing of the Balkan region and on other regions with interesting projects related to conflict such as Northern Ireland and Cyprus. The seminar is likely to take place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina on the kind invitation of SEEYN.
Partner organizations in the project should be volunteer organizations and / or peace organizations with experience in the solving conflicts through volunteering. They are expected to contribute to the project in the following areas:
- Identifying good practices / projects / initiatives on volunteering and conflict resolution / peace building;
- Contributing with ideas and design through delivering workshop for the conference/seminar;
- Identifying relevant government and donor stakeholders from their own countries to be invited to the conference;
- Providing space for the outcome document on their own website / contribute to dissemination of results.
Deadline for submission of the project proposal is 1st September 2007. The EU grant applied for will reimburse for 70% of participants' travel costs and the subsistence costs. There will be a participation fee of around 50-75 EUR.

We will distribute a detailed project description in the second week of August. In the meantime:

- Please let us know if your organization is interested in participating as a partner in this project
- Let us know if you know about other organisations that might interested to participate in such project.
- Let us know about concrete good practices/projects of youth volunteering in conflict resolution and peace buliding that your organisation might have and that we can include as preliminary examples in the project application.

We are very much looking forward to your reactions, we would apreciate to hear back ASAP to assistant@cev.be, so that we can move forward with developing the project.

For those already interested to join the project, we enclose the Partnership agreement (Part III) is attached. Please fill it in and send it to CEV by fax and original document by post / traditional mail.

Best wishes

USA: Historical Research Grants

IAS School of Historical Studies: Opportunities for Scholars 2008-2009

THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY is an independent private institution founded in 1930 to create a community of scholars focused on intellectual inquiry, without the obligations and distractions associated with the teaching of undergraduates. Each year scholars from around the world apply to come to the Institute to pursue their own research. Those who are chosen are offered a membership for a set period and a stipend. Members receive access to the extensive resources of the Institute including offices, access to libraries, subsidized restaurant and housing facilities, and some secretarial services.

THE SCHOOL OF HISTORICAL STUDIES supports scholarship in all fields of historical research, but is concerned principally with the history of western, near eastern and far eastern civilizations, with particular emphasis upon Greek and Roman civilization, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern, and modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, the history of art, the history of science, and modern international relations. The School also offers the Edward T. Cone Membership in Music Studies. Each year the School welcomes approximately forty Members. Most are working on topics in the above mentioned fields but each year the School also selects some scholars working in other areas of historical research. Members in the
School are appointed for either one term (first term Sept. 22 to Dec. 19, second term Jan. 5 to April 3) or for two terms, amounting to a full academic year.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS include the Ph.D. (or equivalent) at the time of application and a substantial record of publication. The School takes into account the stage of the scholar's academic career when considering the list of publications, but in general applicants should have at least several articles already published in scholarly publications in order to be considered eligible. Qualified candidates of any nationality are invited to apply. Scholars are not required to have a current institutional affiliation.

MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED to remain in residence in Princeton during term time. Members' only other obligation is to pursue their own research. If they wish, they may also participate in seminars and meetings within the Institute, and there are ample opportunities for contacts with scholars at nearby universities.

FUNDING FOR MEMBERS comes from a variety of sources including the Institute for Advanced Study's own endowment, grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the Thyssen Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The School will also welcome scholars sponsored by the American Council of Learned Societies through the Frederick Burkhardt Fellowships for recently tenured professors. (Applications for that program must be submitted directly to ACLS. For information see the ACLS website at http://www.acls. org/burkguide. htm.)

INSTITUTE STIPENDS will normally be offered up to a maximum of $60,000 for the full academic year, or $30,000 for one term. A few senior scholars will be offered additional funding to help make up for losses in salary. Up to three Assistant Professors who meet additional eligibility requirements will be selected for Mellon Fellowships that will provide full year support matching their salaries and benefits at the time of application. (Detailed information about this program is on the website: http://www.hs. ias.edu/mellon. htm.) Stipends may be supplemented by other
grants, including sabbatical salaries, but if the total exceeds the salary at the time of application the stipend will be reduced accordingly.

Further information and application materials may be found on the School's web site, www.hs.ias.edu. Inquiries may be sent by email to the Administrative Officer at mzelazny@ias. edu or by post to: School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, Einstein Drive, Princeton, New Jersey 08540. Completed applications must be submitted by 15 November 2007.

USA: Wolfsonian's Fellowship Program

Research Opportunities in Wolfsonian

Collections
The Wolfsonian collection contains artifacts primarily of North American and European origin, dating from 1885–1945. It comprises a variety of media: furniture; industrial-design objects; glass, ceramics, and metalwork; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals. The nations most comprehensively represented are the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Russia/Soviet Union. The objects are interpreted to explore key issues in design history - the way design has both altered and been altered by cultural change, industrial innovation, and strategies of persuasion.

Fellowship Program
The Wolfsonian's fellowship program has hosted scholars from North and South America, Europe, and Australia. By actively encouraging research in late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century material culture, The Wolfsonian-FIU supports the interdisciplinary investigation of its holdings through collaborative curricula and special seminars. Although the library and other collection areas are not open to the public, the museum is open to the research community by appointment. The Wolfsonian also hosts visiting scholars through its competitive fellowship program, established in 1993. You may download information on the fellowship program or call 305.535.2613 or e-mail research@thewolf. fiu.edu for further information.

The Wolfsonian also plays a leading role in the Association of Research Institutes in Art History, whose members include the National Gallery of Art, the Getty Research Institute, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (see www.fiu.edu/ ~ariah).

Ph.D Scholarships at the University of Wollongong

Applications are invited for three full-time PhD scholarships (2 x Australian Postgraduate Award - Industry) and (1 x University Postgraduate Award and HDR Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship) , tenable at the University of Wollongong within the Faculty of Informatics. The APA(I) scholarships are funded by an ARC Linkage Project grant, New Methods for Small Group Analysis from Sample Surveys, awarded to
Professor Ray Chambers and Professor David Steel of the University of Wollongong. The industry partners are the Methodology Division of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics, the Centre for Epidemiology and Research at NSW Health and the Public Health Intelligence unit at the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

Accurate data for population sub-groups and between small areas are fundamental to good policy decisions in health, environment, economics and social issues. Unfortunately, national and state averages of statistics on unemployment, salinity, drought impact, and health often hide large differences at lower levels of aggregation. This local variation needs to be understood so that effective policies can be developed and carried out efficiently and their impact monitored. Using
statistical models that combine survey data with other information about the groups of interest, this project will develop robust and efficient methods for providing information on these variations using data from large-scale national and state surveys. In particular, the aim will be to create new cost-effective methods that address the increasing demand for high quality statistics about the distribution of
important social, economic, health and environmental variables within local areas and small population sub-groups. Implications for survey design for outputs at these levels will be determined, as will robust and efficient methods for analysing these data. This will lead to significant improvements in the data available for such groups and areas, allowing better targeting of policies aimed at addressing local
differences.

The students involved in the project will develop skills in sample survey analysis, the theory and methods of modeling data with group structure and methods for small area estimation. Many of these topics are at the forefront of statistical research. The project will involve the development of innovative methodologies that will be directly applicable by the industry partners as well as by other organisations of great practical importance to Australia.

The students will work in a vibrant and growing research centre, the Centre for Statistical and Survey Methodology, at the University of Wollongong. The Centre comprises 10 academic statisticians, including four professors, and 15 PhD students. The project will involve joint work with, and visits to, the industry partners in Canberra, Sydney and Wellington, which will enhance the quality and relevance of the
research and will provide the student with valuable insights into applied statistical research in government agencies.

The value of the APA(I) scholarships are currently AUS$25,627 per year for three years. The UPA will also provide a stipend of AUS$25,627 per year for 3 years while the HDR Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship will cover the full fee charged by the University for the degree of the PhD for 3 years. There may be opportunities to supplement this with tutoring or other casual work. Additional funding is available for computing equipment and travel. The project involves collaboration with researchers at the University of Pisa in Italy and the Centre also has close ties with the University of Manchester and the University of Southampton in the UK and there may be opportunities for students to visit these institutions.

APA(I) scholarships are open only to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens. However, the UPA is also open to international applicants. Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2(1) degree in Statistics, or an equivalent qualification, by the end of 2007, strong research potential and be able to commence by the end of February 2008. Applications, including a curriculum vitae,
academic transcript and contact details of two or more referees should be sent to Prof Ray Chambers, Centre for Statistical and Survey Methodology, School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics, University of Wollongong, NSW 2522. Closing date: Friday September 28, 2007. Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents should also include proof of citizenship or permanent residency.

We welcome enquiries about the project or the Centre. For more information, please contact Professor Ray Chambers, ph (61) 2 42213809, email ray@uow.edu. au or Professor David Steel, ph (61) 2 42213823, email dsteel@uow.edu. au.
