PhD position in “Traffic State Estimation and Prediction” (Delft University of Technology, Netherlands)

In this PhD research you build on previous work in the Advanced Traffic Monitoring (ATMO) project. In that program a so-called Microscopic Online Simulator (MiOS) has been developed. MiOS can be plugged onto a real traffic network (given there are some measurements), estimate the current state and make short term predictions (see www.webmios.nl). MiOS connects to measurements via an adaptive origin-destination matrix. However, this relationship is underdetermined. In this PhD project you extend the MiOS program by taking an alternative route to online modelling, by making the traffic flow model itself adaptive. Together with a postdoc you will develop a multiclass-multilane online traffic simulation model which connects directly to data. During your PhD you are expected to follow relevant courses and – given you manage to publish your results – attend international conferences

You have a MSc in a technical field, preferably traffic or mathematics related. Experience/knowledge of traffic operations is a benefit, but not a necessity. Some skjills in programming and particularly in working with matlab is a big plus. You are communicative and speak and write English fluently. You are able to work in research projects independently as well as in a team and are prepared also to support and collaborate in other research projects within the transport and planning department if required.
