Job description

PhD student Risk of Airborne Particles (RAPTES)

You will investigate the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory health effects related to exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM). You will quantify air pollution exposure at selected sites with contrasts in local source emissions and expose healthy volunteers at these locations. You will combine measurements of
systemic and respiratory health with characterization of the physical, chemical and oxidant properties of inhaled PM. You will work in a multi-disciplinary and international team.

You will present your findings at national and international meetings and conferences, and publish the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and your PhD thesis. You will supervise MSc students during their internships and follow training courses relevant for your research.

We are looking for:
An enthusiastic candidate with a MSc degree in the field of life and/or biomedical sciences or biology, with a strong interest in epidemiology and toxicology. You have good organisational, communication and writing skills, especially in Dutch and English. You are also a team player and self-motivating. Experience with
epidemiological or air quality monitoring techniques will be your advantage.

Organization

Utrecht University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) is an interfacultary research institute from the Faculties Veterinary Medicine and Medicine, and the departments Biology and
Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Science Faculty at the Utrecht University. The mission of IRAS is to provide research and education on human health risks of exposure to potentially harmful agents in the environment, at the workplace and through the food chain. IRAS has three research divisions. The Environmental Epidemiology division performs epidemiological research on respiratory, cardiovascular and carcinogenic health risks in relation to biological and chemical exposures. Within the Veterinary Public Health division research is conducted to identify and study possible adverse health effects from microbial and non-microbial agents occurring in food derived from the animal production process. Research within the Toxicology division covers the part of the risk assessment in which the availability and dose – adverse health effect relationships of toxic substances are studied. The aim of IRAS is to perform quality research with a high relevance for
society.

The IRAS offers an enthusiastic and dynamic working environment for young scientists and has a vacant PhD position.

You will be working on the project "Risk of Airborne Particles (RAPTES)" at the interface between environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment and toxicology. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Centre for Environmental Health Research (MGO) of the National Institute for Public Health and the
Environment (RIVM), Bilthoven, the Netherlands. You will be stationed at RIVM.

Conditions of employment

Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2000 - 2500

Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2472
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 3 years
Maximum hours per week: 38

Additional conditions of employment:
Terms of employment

We offer a temporary full time appointment of one year with the perspective of prolongation with another 3 years. The gross income is between € 1,933.- and € 2,472.- (salary scale "P" Collaborative Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities) for a full time appointment.
