PhD Studentship
Primary Health Care
Department of Community Based Medicine, Medicine and Dentistry
We are seeking applications from graduates with good honours degrees (2.1 or higher) and an interest in primary care health services research. Research experience and/or a Masters degree in a related area will be highly advantageous. Relevant academic or professional backgrounds include medical sociology, anthropology, health economics,
health psychology, medical statistics, exercise and health, nursing or other allied health profession.
The successful applicant will receive a stipend (currently £12,300 pa), PhD fees and a research training support grant. The studentship will be for three years.
The interests of the Unit are wide ranging and members of the Unit conducting research in these areas have expertise in a range of methodological approaches (see our website http://www.bristol. ac.uk/primaryhea lthcare/index. htm). Outlines of
topics are provided including the name(s) of potential adviser(s). These outlines offer some guidance about the content of the research project, but you must include a proposal for the research you wish to undertake (approx 500-1500 words), including the methods to be employed and a timetable for the research. The proposal need not be
definitive - indeed we would expect further refinement once you arrive in the Department - but it should demonstrate your ideas for transforming the outline into a research programme for your PhD. You are strongly encouraged to contact the named supervisor(s) to discuss your ideas.
Candidates may also apply to study a topic of their own choice. You are strongly advised to contact potential adviser(s) to discuss your ideas, which should address an important and relevant question within primary health care and fit broadly into the research themes of the Unit.
The successful candidate will have access to high quality research training through a wide range of short courses as well as informal contact with academic and research staff in a multidisciplinary environment. The University's central Staff Development programme provides further opportunities for personal and PhD-related training.
There may also be opportunities to contribute towards the Unit's teaching activity.
The Person
The successful applicant will have:
* a demonstrable interest in primary care research (essential)
* a good honours degree in a relevant discipline (essential)
* a Masters degree and/or research experience in a relevant area (desirable)
* a demonstrable ability to complete work on time and budget (essential)
* the ability to work alone and as a part of multidisciplinary team (essential)
Further Opportunities
There are excellent opportunities to apply for prestigious personal research awards from bodies such as the National Co-ordinating Centre for Research Capacity Development (Department of Health) and the Medical Research Council. Existing staff within the Unit have been highly successful in gaining such awards and the successful candidate would be encouraged to apply for an award at an appropriate time
during their post.
Application
Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Professor Sharp by telephone (0117 331 3809) or email (debbie.sharp@ bristol.ac. uk) in the first instance for an informal discussion of this opportunity. You may then be directed to other member(s) of staff to discuss your specific research ideas. Further information is available on the Unit website at http://www.bris. ac.uk/primaryhea lthcare.
Application should be by curriculum vitae together with the names and addresses of three referees and an outline proposal for your research. Applications should be sent to The Personnel Office (EO), University of Bristol, Senate House, Bristol BS8 1TH quoting reference PHC/PhD/2006 by 6 November 2006.
