PhD research fellowship within the project
«Multiscale Method for the Numerical Simulation of Drop-Surface Impact»
at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (IVT-95/07)
At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, a PhD scholarship is available in the Computational Fluid Dynamics Research Group at the Division of Fluids Engineering,
Department of Energy and Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology. We have been active in multiphase flow simulations and have had close collaboration with SINTEF, The Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research at the Norwegian Institute of Technology.
The objective of the current PhD project «Multiscale Method for the Numerical Simulation of Drop-Surface Impact» is to develop, analyze and apply multiscale
methods for the numerical simulation of the impact of a drop on a surface. Molecular dynamics describing microscopic effects during the impact will be incorporated into a macroscopic multiphase flow solver. The micro- and macroscopic scales will be coupled by the heterogeneous multiscale method. After implementation and validation for benchmark test cases, the multiscale method will be applied to study the
interaction of a drop with a dry solid surface in detail.
The PhD candidate is expected to hold a master's degree in a subject relevant for the PhD project and to have
good knowledge of fluid dynamics / fluid physics,
good knowledge of scientific computing, and
good programming skills. Some acquaintance with multiscale methods, multiphase flow or molecular dynamics will be useful.
The PhD scholarship is limited to 4 years. It is required that the person employed satisfies the requirements for PhD students, participates in the course program of the PhD studies and finishes the PhD degree within 4 years. For 25 % of the time, the candidate will assist the Division of Fluid Dynamics in teaching obligations.
Further information about the position may be obtained from Professor Bernhard Müller (bernhard.muller@ ntnu.no), Professor Tor Ytrehus (tor.ytrehus@ ntnu.no), and Associate Professor Maria Fernandino (maria.fernandino@ ntnu.no).
Conditions of appointment: PhD students follow code 1017, grade 43 - 47, gross NOK 325 600 to NOK 348 900 per year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 43. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the
applicant's plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.
The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government's policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Persons with immigrant background and women are encouraged to apply.
The application must contain information of educational background and work experience. Copies of transcripts and reference letters should be enclosed.
An application inclusive CV, grade transcripts and other enclosures should be sent electronically through this page (Apply for this position), ref.no. IVT-95/07. Application deadline: 25 January 2008.
