The internship program will run for 5 months starting with the 1st of October, 2008.

INTERNSHIP WITHIN THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION FOR
YOUNG ROMA UNIVERSITY GRADUATES
IN COOPERATION WITH THE OPEN SOCIETY INSTITUTE
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION June 30, 2008
The European Commission in co-operation with the Open Society Institute is pleased to offer 5 five-month internships beginning on October 1, 2008 for young Roma university graduates from all new member states (excluding Cyprus and Malta), Croatia, F.Y.R.O.M, Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro.
The training period involves work experience in one of the Commission's departments.
The internship has the following main aims:
a.. To give Roma interns a general idea of the objectives and problems of European integration;
b.. To provide them with practical knowledge of the working of Commission departments;
c.. To enable them to acquire personal experience by means of the contacts made in the course of their everyday work;
d.. To enable them to enrich and put into practice the knowledge they have acquired during their studies or professional careers.
Profile of interns:
· Nationals from all new member states (excluding Cyprus and Malta), Croatia, F.Y.R.O.M, Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro, who are of Roma origin;
· Applications from women are encouraged;
· The candidates must have completed a course of university education and obtained a full degree or its equivalent (for minimum national education qualifications required, see Annex 1) by the closing date for applications. Applications are only accepted if they are accompanied by a photocopy of the candidate's degree certificate (or, in the absence of this document, an official statement from the university confirming the degree result, see Annex 2 for list of university degrees sought by the EC services);
· Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in civil society work;
a.. Working knowledge of at least English or French. Ability to draft reports in one of these languages. Other languages would be appreciated;
a.. Minimum computer literacy;
· The age limit for interns is minimum 25. However, the Selection Committee may, if there is a good reason, make exceptions to this age limit at the candidate's request (in which case, a cover letter should be submitted with the application form). As the Commission's in-service training programme is addressing young graduates at the beginning of their career, this age limit should not be considered to be discriminatory;
a.. The internship scheme at the Commission is open to candidates who have not benefited yet from in-service training in another European institution or body;
Time frame:
Five-month internship - Starting date: October 1, 2008
Note: Candidates should only apply if they seriously intend to take up the offer of an internship within the European Commission. Notification of withdrawal from the program after selection is unacceptable as it precludes others from this opportunity and is a source of inconvenience to both Open Society Institute and the European Commission.
Working conditions:
· Health and accident insurance is compulsory and must be obtained by the selected intern before the start of the internship. The OSI grant will include the costs of the health and accident insurance for 5 months;
· Relevant infrastructure (office space, computer etc.) will be provided by the European Commission;
· Each intern will be assigned a supervisor.
In-service scheme description:
Job description:
a.. Job description will be provided by the senior official (supervisor) to whom the intern will be assigned during the period of his/her in-service training. The supervisor will follow the intern's work. The intern is expected to participate in all the tasks of the team. The type of work will be equivalent to that of a junior executive-grade official, e.g. compiling information and documentation, organizing working groups, forums, public hearings and meetings, preparing reports and replying to queries, participation in team meetings, filing, linguistic revision of texts, etc.
b.. The internship will give an opportunity to become acquainted with /involved in the activities related to Romani issues within the respective DG.
Practical information:
a.. Trainees must hold upon their arrival proper permit/visa in relation to their country of origin as required by the Belgian authorities for 5-month tourist stay.
b.. Accommodation expenses are included in the Open Society Institute grant. The stagiaires must arrange accommodation themselves, however OSI might assist the interns in finding suitable accommodation. The EC will provide them with basic information and guidance at the beginning of the stage.
The internship grant:
Financial assistance for the internship is provided by the Open Society Institute. The 5-month internship grant covers:
a.. Travel expenses to and from Brussels will be arranged by OSI/RPP (using the cheapest available means of transportation) . Actual travel expenses will be covered by the OSI up to a maximum of 600 Euro.
b.. Accommodation, subsistence, health and accident insurance: 6000 Euro (1200 Euro/month).
Note: The Commission is not involved in budget management or in making the relevant payments in relation to this programme.

· Copies of all the university degrees/diplomas obtained and declared in the application (for candidates who have completed their degree course but who have not yet received an official degree certificate, a formal official statement from university confirming the degree result is sufficient);

A PhD opening is available at the University of Iceland to research the physical behavior of one of Iceland´s largest and deepest lakes, Lake Lagarfljót. The successful candidate will characterize processes such as stratification, internal seiching, and differential heating and cooling through field experiments, analytical and numerical methods.

A qualitative study of British South Asian Carers' views of their Children with Developmental Disabilities
A collaborative studentship provided by Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust and the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham.
Funding is available for a three-year PhD studentship from October 2008, for a largely qualitative research project which will involve close collaboration between the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham and the Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust. The proposed research will seek to develop an understanding of the views of South Asian parents about their children, and about their developmental disabilities. A detailed, culturally-sensitive, and systematic account of these views will allow us to understand their role in shaping the care of children. The project will allow us to better understand parents access to, and interactions with, service systems. As a result, we will be able to help South Asian carers to use services more effectively, and for services to adapt more effectively to the needs of this client group.
Research supervision will be provided by Dr John Rose and Dr Michael Larkin in the Clinical Psychology team. Dr Rose has a track record of conducting and supervising research in the field of developmental disability; Dr Larkin has a track record on conducting and supervising qualitative and phenomenological research in the area of culture and psychology. The successful candidate will join a 5* RAE-rated Psychology department with excellent facilities, established research groups, and substantial external funding. The School supports around 250 postgraduate students in professional training and research degrees.
The studentship requires an Honours degree in Psychology (2:1 or above); Enthusiasm for research, and commitment to producing and disseminating excellent qualitative research; Commitment to the wellbeing of people with learning disability, and their families; Good communication and organisational skills. Prior knowledge of qualitative or phenomenological psychology would be a considerable advantage, as would fluency in at least one South Asian language.
The studentship will be at the basic UK research council rate (expected GBP 12,600 per annum) to provide support over the three-year period, and will cover tuition fees. The student may also be eligible to contribute to our paid Teaching Assistant programme.

PhD Studentship - New Approaches to Environmental Pollution Control - University College London, UK
Approximately half of all the NOx released into the atmosphere is believed to be from vehicle emissions. NOx emissions cause acid rain, smog and respiratory diseases. Engines must run colder and less efficiently to minimise their formation. Both Otto and Diesel engines produce NOx which is removed by catalysts but for this to work, Otto engines must run at stoichiometric conditions and Diesel engines run under oxidising conditions, so no commercial NOx control catalyst is available. This project takes a new approach to NOx management using high temperature electrochemistry in which, if it is successful, the pollutant will be destroyed close to source.
We seek a candidate who is prepared to take a pioneering attitude to research, to learn new skills and techniques and to make a commitment to three years of challenging scientific research. The successful applicant for this position will join an active interdisciplinary research group in the Department of Chemistry and will work in close collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL.

We are looking young people (mainly 18 - 25) interested in being young trainer in workshops, trainings, seminars and similar activities organized for youth on local and international level and target topics such as peace, volunteering, youth work, international cooperation, Youth in Action Programme, participation, cultural awareness, project, organization and volunteer management, team building and other interconnected topics.
Although there is no one general standard for programme or quality of trainings, we will base our programme and methodology on European youth trainings practice, also presenting other possible approaches. The programme is built on inputs, experiential learning and lot of practice.
Another important feature of this training course will be self directed learning process where participants will have space to practice tools such are Youthpass and European Portofolio for youth workers.
SEEYN training centre organized nearly 50 trainings in first half of this year, so we want and we need to engage new young trainers in our programme and we do count on participants of this training to be our future resource. Experience from this training can be useful in any other youth training in local or international level.

This project will involve the synthesis and characterisation of functionalised macrocyclic complexes of divalent transition metals and their subsequent immobilisation into porous polymeric matrices. The goal is to develop the first heterogeneous model system for Carbonic Anhydrase, an enzyme which catalyses the hydrolysis of carbon dioxide near the diffusion limit. This is proof-of-principle research to determine if such compounds could have utility in chemical carbon capture technologies. The successful candidate will gain skills in synthetic coordination chemistry, single-crystal diffraction, polymer synthesis and porous material characterisation. This project will be supervised by Dr Darren Bradshaw.

Because physical models are not predictive enough in motor calibration design, to represent engine exhausts, one has to resort to response surfaces techniques. Experimental data are fitted by means of non linear regression, locally when the torque and the engine speed are both fixed, or globally when everything vary.
To check the results, engineers rely on their expertise. For example, locally, CO2 emissions should decrease when the main injection timing (AVI) and the fuel injection pressure (PRAIL) increase. Globally, constraints coming from physical limitations and considerations become more and more stringent.
However, traditional regression techniques do not guarantee that all the constraints will be satisfied. In the case of CO2, one should observe monotony constraints, i.e. the response should increase or decrease monotonically when AVI and PRAIL vary. Similarly, maximum or minimum values are not guaranteed to be respected, since the calculated response can oscillate between the fitting points.
From the end of 90's, some new methods have been proposed to alleviate these limitations. A bibliographical review shows that many different techniques have been proposed, based on available regression techniques. Smoothing splines have been used, as well as generalized additive models, krigging or wavelets. Some of these developments are available through internet.
The goal of this post-doctoral study is to propose strategies to tackle these problems, to test and use the new techniques that have to be developed, and to apply them to the case of responses surfaces in the field of motor calibration. Coding will be done in MATLAB. Expected difficulties concern the high dimension of the regressors space, as well as the calculation time which has to stay manageable.
Education and qualification:
PhD in applied mathematics or in statistics, solid background in experimental design and response surfaces methodology. Practice of a programming language like MATLAB, C or FORTRAN.

You will work on the detection of gene deletion mutations in Arabidopsis thaliana via hybridisation of mutant plant genomic DNA to whole-genome microarray chips within Professor Nick Harberds group. PhD Position - Physics of Nanostructures, Tyndall National Institute, Ireland
A new group (Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures) was established in January 2007 at Tyndall National Institute (http://www.tyndall.ie) under an SFI (http://www.sfi.ie/home/index.asp) Principal Investigator grant. The group is led by Dr. E. Pelucchi. The research will concentrate on the epitaxy, optical properties and spectroscopy of site controlled Pyramidal quantum dots and wires [1] and on their extension to telecommunication wavelengths.
This novel approach to site controlled quantum wires and dots (QD) growth has been pioneered by Dr Pelucchi in the group of Prof Kapon in EPFL, using MOVPE growth on a pre-patterned substrate to achieve reproducible QD emission spectra with, for example, the lowest inhomogeneous broadening to date for a QD epitaxial field. Postdoc Position - Synthetic Organic Chemistry, University of Oxford, UK
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work in the Chemical Research Laboratory, University of Oxford, under the supervision of Dr Michael Willis. The post is funded through the recent EPSRC/GlaxoSmithKline-sponsored initiative on Array Chemistry. The post is for up to one year.
The project involves developing new tandem catalytic processes suitable for the synthesis of a variety of heterocycle systems in array format. See Angew Chem. Int. Ed. 2005 44, 403, and Adv. Syn. Cat. 2006, 348, 851, for background studies. This collaborative project will involve spending some time at GlaxoSmithKlines research site in Stevenage.
Candidates will have a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, or will have submitted a thesis prior to taking up the appointment. A background in synthetic organic chemistry and a strong interest in catalysis and organometallic chemistry is essential. Experience and /or an interest in automated synthesis and purification would also be an advantage.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemistry, University Louis Pasteur, France
A one year post-doctoral position (renewable one year) is available from september 2008 in the SAMS laboratory of Strasbourg. Our laboratory focuses on the study and the synthesis of molecules which can spontaneously self-assemble in functional superlattices and nano-objects. We also develop dynamic systems in order to combine several responsive hierarchical organization levels.
The present research project will rest on the auto-catalytic formation of supramolecular self-assemblies.

3. Effects of eradication of Salmonella Dublin from cattle herds.
Job description
With reference to the project manager, the work of the PhD fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within research fields mentioned in the following areas:
In Denmark a surveillance program for Salmonella Dublin in cattle herds has been running since 2002. The program provides unique data to assess change in prevalence over time in the whole country and good data on each herd status for dairy herds and to some extend non-dairy herds. In 2006, it was decided to start an eradication campaign for Salmonella Dublin and the goal is to eradicate the infection from Denmark by 2014. There are about 700 infected herds in Denmark today and many of these will be trying to intervene against spread of the infection in their herd and try to eliminate it from the premises over a period of 1-3 years.
There are good experiences and tools available to aid in the eradication strategies in Denmark and to follow the epidemiology of the infection in the intervention herds. However, there is a need for a better understanding of the economical, health and welfare effects of strategies that lead to elimination of the infection in the herds. Such knowledge may lead to more cost-effective intervention strategies and may provide decision support based on animal health economics for or against eradication of infections, such as Salmonella Dublin.
The work in this PhD fellowship will be performed at KU LIFE in close collaboration with researchers at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FAS), Research Centre Foulum, Aarhus University (AU), who are working on incorporating the effects of eradication of Salmonella Dublin from dairy herds into an existing simulation model (SimHerd-model). The PhD fellow will mainly be expected to be doing research based on field work and the use of register data from real life cattle herds. This includes interviews with Danish cattle farmers, herd visits and epidemiological analyses to assess epidemiological, health, welfare and economical parameters of relevance in relation to intervention against Salmonella Dublin. The PhD fellow will also have the possibility to learn about simulation modelling of infectious diseases and animal health economics models as part of the project.

6. Effect of nano-particles of silver on development and growth.

With reference to the project manager, the work of the PhD fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within the field nano-technology in animal nutrition. The main objective of the project is to investigate effects of nano-molecules of colloidal silver on resistance, growth and development on the molecular, cellular, tissue and whole body level. The project assumes the introduction of components in poultry nutrition, which have not been used before, aiming at substituting the use of antibiotics, coccidiostats as well as other pharmaceutics by highly effective, non-chemical action of nano-particles of Ag. To a large extent the applied analytical methods will be based on advanced biotechnological techniques and the use of visualization techniques, including confocal microscopy. Quantitative measurements of energy metabolism in embryos and chickens at cellular and whole body level will be carried out by calorimetric techniques. With reference to the project manager, the work of the PhD fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within the field of intrauterine nutrition and metabolic programming in mink. The main objective of the project is to document the metabolic response and adaptations occurring in mink malnourished during different critical windows of foetal life, and how such effects relate to adult animal health, performance and longevity. The main hypothesis is that malnutrition during critical windows in foetal life will cause alterations in the metabolism of the programmed individuals, and that these alterations can be documented by changes in key regulatory hormones, gene expression for some key enzymes and adipokines and by increased body fat content, obesity rate and reduced lifetime performance of the programmed individuals. The methods used will be a combination of quantitative energy and protein metabolism studies with profiles of regulatory hormones and use of up to date molecular biology techniques for studying gene expression for enzymes and adipokines.

Comparative studies in humans and sheep on prenatal dietary insults and the consequences for postnatal endocrine and metabolic function
Impact of pre- and postnatal dietary interactions on development of metabolic and endocrine (dys)function in sheep with emphasis on:
insulin and IGF-1 signalling and sensitivity in muscles
β-cell development and maturation of insulin secretory function
Molecular mechanisms: gene expression, epigenetics, miRNA translation
An extensive and relevant biological material is available from experimental studies with sheep, and from different co-hort studies in humans (including twin study). 6. Effect of nano-particles of silver on development and growth.
Job description
With reference to the project manager, the work of the PhD fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within the field nano-technology in animal nutrition. The main objective of the project is to investigate effects of nano-molecules of colloidal silver on resistance, growth and development on the molecular, cellular, tissue and whole body level. The project assumes the introduction of components in poultry nutrition, which have not been used before, aiming at substituting the use of antibiotics, coccidiostats as well as other pharmaceutics by highly effective, non-chemical action of nano-particles of Ag. To a large extent the applied analytical methods will be based on advanced biotechnological techniques and the use of visualization techniques, including confocal microscopy. Quantitative measurements of energy metabolism in embryos and chickens at cellular and whole body level will be carried out by calorimetric techniques. Utilization of nutrients and growth performance will be measured in newly hatched chickens and growing chickens.

Job description
With reference to the project manager, the work of the PhD fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within the field of intrauterine nutrition and metabolic programming in mink. The main objective of the project is to document the metabolic response and adaptations occurring in mink malnourished during different critical windows of foetal life, and how such effects relate to adult animal health, performance and longevity. The main hypothesis is that malnutrition during critical windows in foetal life will cause alterations in the metabolism of the programmed individuals, and that these alterations can be documented by changes in key regulatory hormones, gene expression for some key enzymes and adipokines and by increased body fat content, obesity rate and reduced lifetime performance of the programmed individuals. The methods used will be a combination of quantitative energy and protein metabolism studies with profiles of regulatory hormones and use of up to date molecular biology techniques for studying gene expression for enzymes and adipokines.
