Postdoc - Integrated Perimeter Security, University of Twente,Netherlands

Job description

The Computer Science department of the University of Twente has a 3-year PostDoc vacancy for the VISPER project on integrated perimeter security. The research is sponsored by the Dutch national security research program Sentinels (http://www.sentinels.nl/) and five industrial partners.
Research

The organisational security perimeter, which once was simply defined as the fence around the premises of an organisation, is becoming increasingly hard to uphold. We call this process deperimeterisation.

It is visible in the digital domain (where data moves between organisations through networks or is even stored remotely in a cloud), the social domain (where one individual may play different roles in cooperating organisations) and the physical domain (where appliances such as mobile phones and laptops move around).

Deperimeterisation poses many security problems. Proposed solutions include focussing on data-level security, using sticky policies and Hippocratic databases, possibly dropping the organisational security perimeter altogether.
The VISPER project (http://visper.eemcs.utwente.nl) takes a different approach, by trying to integrate security between the social, physical and digital domains. Specifying policies across these domains (for example based on role, location and application) creates a virtual security perimeter around the organization. In the project we will develop such policies, threat models and tools.

Team

The project team consists of researchers from both the Distributed and Embedded Security (DIES) and Information Systems (IS) research groups. In total, six staff contribute to the project, including 2 full-time PhD students. The PostDoc will become part of the DIES research group, which is headed by prof. dr. Pieter Hartel.
