Call for Papers - International Journalism Conference in Latvia

The student governance body of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Latvia and the European Forum of Journalism Students are pleased to announce that in May 2006, they are organising an international forum for students of journalism and communications studies in cooperation with the Netherlands Royal Embassy. The aim of the forum is to promote an exchange of ideas among students in various countries when it comes to research and professional work.

The organisers hope that presentations and debates will merge theory and practice as much as possible, and the emphasis at the forum will be the study of cases which make it possible to learn about the specifics and problems of media operations in various European countries.

Requirements

Potential participants in the forum are requested to submit a summary of their presentation – 100 to 300 words long in English. The summary must clearly
define a problem which relates to practice, and it must also mention the possible solutions to the problem. The applicant must also define the main keywords which relate to the subject that is to be presented. The application can be downloaded here: http://www.lu.lv/journalism/ and it must be sent to the E-mail address
journalism@lu.lv.

The forum will involve six areas of discussion: 1) The professional ethics of the media and of journalists in the 21st century; 2) Commercialisation of the media – seeking boundaries; 3) Media and Gender; 4) Media, Culture and History; 5) Media and
politics vs. politicised media; 6)The new media: Developments and problems.

Deadlines

Summaries must be submitted by March 10, 2006. All applications will be evaluated by faculty members from the Department of Communications Studies at the University of Latvia. The results of the evaluation will be announced in the third week of March.

The financial resources of the organisers are limited, but applicants can seek accommodations from the University of Latvia.
