CfP: Gender Stereotypes in Media in SEE

GENDER STEREOTYPES IN MEDIA:
REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN PRINT MEDIA IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE

The Mediacentar Sarajevo is conducting a comprehensive research project focusing on the issue of gender stereotype roles, methods and strategies of discrimination against women in print media in Southeast Europe. Countries covered by the project are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro, including Kosovo.

Publication of a book on media portrayal of women in the countries of Southeast Europe, with contributions by authors from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro, including Kosovo, is planned for the end of 2006.

The research is imagined to be a critical reflection of ideological pattern that nowadays governs the ways of presenting women in print media.

The total of 9 research papers / articles will be published, with at least one author coming from each of the above listed countries that are included in this project.

DETAILS OF THE INVITATION TO CONTRIBUTORS

Mediacentar Sarajevo invites researchers / gender activists / media professionals, to propose articles/ research papers that would provide in-depth insight into the patterns of media representation of women in the print media in their societies.

A. GUIDELINES FOR PAPER PROPOSALS
• Proposals must be written in one of the following languages: English, Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian
• Proposals should not be longer than 5000 characters.
• Proposals should describe the following:
- Definition of the topic of the article
- Methodological approach
- List of core literature and sources to be used in writing the paper
• Proposals must relate to original work of the author that is to be undertaken specifically for this project. Mediacentar Sarajevo will not accept proposals for research papers / articles which, at the time of submission, are under review for or have already been published or accepted for publication in a journal, conference or another publication
• Proposals should be sent to Mediacentar Sarajevo no later than March 1, 2006:

B. ELIGIBILITY OF AUTHORS
Authors must fulfill following criteria:
• Be citizens of one of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro, including Kosovo
• Have a strong track-record in research and publishing in gender related issues and / or in media-related issues
• Are fluent in one of the following languages: English, Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian


C. TOPICS OF INTEREST
We are interested in articles that would cover some of the following specific topics:

• The specificity of the gender stereotyping in the daily newspapers;
• Ghettoisation of women in „Women pages";
• Visual aspect of the women representation in the print media (photography and gender stereotypes)
• Women and advertising / advertising and gender stereotypes;
• Women visibility in print media;
• Representation of women in topics that cover trafficking and the gender violence;
• Women and the notion of Nation in the media / Gender and ethnicity;
• The role of women voices in the newspapers;
• Women roles in the media: Mother / Victim / Sex object;
• Women, age, class and the media;
• Media, gender representation and cultural (local) context.
• Gender (un)sensitive language;
• Challenging gender stereotypes;
Submissions of an innovative nature that might fall outside these categories but are still related to the overall topic of gender stereotype roles, methods and strategies of discrimination against women in print media in Southeast Europe are also encouraged.

D. LANGUAGE
Paper proposals and articles are to be submitted in English, Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian language.

E. FINAL PAPERS
• Final papers should be between 30.000 and 40.000 characters.
• All papers are reviewed by members of our Editorial Board.
• Authors are expected to revise accepted papers based on reviewers' comments. Normally, two weeks are given for revisions.
• Final papers are to be submitted by June 30, 2006.

F. AUTHORS HONORARIA
• Selected authors will be awarded honoraria in the net amount of 1.500 EUR for an article.
• The honoraria will be paid to authors upon the delivery of the final version of the commissioned articles, and in accordance with a contract that will be signed between Mediacentar Sarajevo and each individual author.

G. APPLICATION HAS TO CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING
• A PAPER PROPOSAL (OF UP TO 5.000 CHARACTERS) IN ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATION GIVEN IN THE SECTION A. (ABOVE);
• CV (WITH DETAILED CONTACTS FOR TWO REFERENCES);
• 2 EXAMPLES OF PUBLISHED WORK RELEVANT TO THIS PROJECT (IN ENGLISH, BOSNIAN, CROATIAN OR SERBIAN);
• DETAILED LIST OF PUBLISHED WORKS AND PREVIOUS RESEARCH PROJECTS;

H. SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
• All submissions must be received before March 1, 2006.

I. TIMEFRAME
- Proposals for the contribution - to be submitted before March 1, 2006;
- Selection of authors by March 10, 2006;
- First preliminary version of article to be submitted by May 5, 2006;
- Final papers have to be submitted by June 30, 2006.
