CALL FOR PAPERS

International Labor Migration Seminar
Labour Migration a Solution or an Obstacle for Development?

November 10-12, 2006
Cluj Napoca, Romania

Financed by Open Society Foundation in the framework of East-East: Partnership Beyond Borders Program.

The Public Policy Centre from Romania invites researchers and practitioners to submit empirical research and policy papers for the International Labor Migration Seminar dealing with reviewing the economic and social impact of migrant remittances in Central and South Eastern Europe. Understanding the linkages between migration
and development has become a topical issue considering the importance of the returns to migration in financing development. Central and South Eastern European countries have increasingly become critical beneficiaries of remittances. (For instance, if in
1990 less than 1% of global remittances were directed to the countries in this region, by 2005 it was nearly 13%.) Nevertheless, there is very little empirical evidence about whether or not migration and remittances solve poverty issues and lead to development in the countries of Central and South Eastern Europe.

To improve our understanding of the economic and social impact of migration, the program committee invites papers on the following themes:

1. The economic growth effects of remittances;
2. The contribution of remittances to economic and social inequality;
3. The role of migration in business development;
4. The economic and social development impact of remittances.

Researchers with selected papers will be invited to participate at the seminar, which will be held between November 10-12, 2006, in Cluj Napoca, Romania. The number of participants is limited to 25.

Paper Submission Deadline: October 15, 2006

Papers should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words in length and should be submitted electronically by email to seminar@cenpo. ro. Also, please attach your CV or resume. Selected papers will be published in a joint volume. For further information, please visit our web-page: www.cenpo.ro. A limited number of grants covering travel and
local costs are available to Central and South Eastern European participants due to the generous support of the Open Society Foundation in the framework of East-East: Partnership Beyond Borders Program.
