The Centre for Sami Studies at University of Tromsø invites applications for a three year PhD studentship financed by the Norwegian Research Council under the auspices of the European Science Foundation's BOREAS research programme.
The candidate will be expected to carry out primary research leading to a doctoral dissertation in collaboration with an international group of scholars. The full programme is an interdisciplinary project combining the efforts of anthropologists, archaeologists, and historical demographers.
The candidate would write their dissertation in one of these three disciplines, but would be expected to engage with researchers in the other areas. We would also expect the candidate to reflect on our goals of sharing methods and revitalising skills in communities. This position also offers resources for field research and the opportunity to travel to international seminars organised by the ESF. An application should stress primary research in a region of Sapmi and one of the three research trajectories. The application must include a CV and a 5 page scientifically grounded description that summarises how their PhD theme would elaborate the goals of this project.
The period as a PhD candidate will be used for research education and normally leads to doctoral degree. For the individual candidate, a plan shall be prepared outlining how the period as a candidate will be carried out both with regard to research projects and other scientific training. Preferably, this should be done at the time of appointment, and at the latest three months after appointment. The plan must mention by name who has duty to provide guidance and supervision.
