PhD studentship in Astronomy - Delft University of Technology

PhD Position for the NWO Funded Project Astrostream Delft Univerity of Technology Faculty of Electrical Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science
Department of Software
DELFT, 2628 CD (Zuid-Holland), 38 hours per week

Job description

The Astrostream project aims at creating an application development environment for stream-based astronomy applications tailored to the needs of the next-generation
LOFAR and SKA radio telescopes. The Astrostream software architecture will be optimised for high productivity, high efficiency, multi-platform support, and flexibility in run-time behaviour. Astrostream is intended for challenging applications with many terabits of streaming input data and tens of teraflops of processing power, typically on large cluster computers.

The Astrostream framework comprises four parts: (i) online stream programming, (ii) grid-based stream coordination, (iii) off-line streaming, and (iv) demonstrators. The on-line streaming is based on an SP (series-parallel) parallel programming model with stream-based and event handling extensions. Astrostream will allow existing
transformational code to be embedded in an XML framework. The stream handling parallel programs will be coupled to a symbolic performance estimator used to provide user feedback, and will be used for automatic load balancing. The grid-based
coordination layer deals with methods of expressing global coordination of distributed parallel stream-based applications. Off-line stream processing will investigate self-calibration techniques for multiple data streams stored on disks. The Astrostream framework will be validated with two demonstrators containing model-in-the- loop astronomy applications.

Organization

Delft Univerity of Technology Faculty of Electrical Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science
Department of Software Technology
Delft University of Technology is a multifaceted institution offering education and carrying out research within the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level. Education, research and designs are strongly oriented towards applicability. TU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft we work in an environment where technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises 8 faculties, unique laboratories,
research institutes and schools.

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science characteristics are a high level of ambition and the choice of synergy. The faculty is a strong international party in the field of Telecommunication, Software technology, Micro electronics & Computer Engineering, Electrical energy technology, Multimedia and Applied Mathematics. With a population of 1800 students (BSc and MSc), and 750 employees including almost 300 post docs the faculty is strong and pleasant organization.

The Department of Software Technology comprises the research groups in the EEMCS Faculty working on core Computer Science aspects. The department is responsible for a major part of the curriculum of the BSc and MSc Computer Science programmes. The department seeks to play a leading role in research, both nationally and internationally, in a number of focused research areas. The department comprises three sections: Software Engineering, Parallel and Distributed Systems, and Algorithms

The department's research mission is to perform excellent research at an internationally recognised level in the design, construction and analysis of complex concurrent and co-operative computer systems. Inspiration for the research topics derives largely from technical ICT problems in industry and society in terms of distributed processing, sensor networks and embedded systems. The department strives to achieve a good balance between fundamental and applied research projects; the latter are carried out largely with industrial partners. The department's strategy is to embed its research in major long-term projects and collaborations with other
universities, institutes and industry.
