Visiting International Scholar-in-Residence in Gender Studies

A Joint Program of the Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center and the Women’s Studies Program at Idaho State University Pocatello, Idaho

The Anderson Center and the Women’s Studies Program at Idaho State University are pleased to announce an invitation for scholars from outside the U.S. researching gender-related issues to apply to be a Scholar-in-Residenc e. For the length of her/his stay, ranging beween one month and one year, the Scholar-in-Residenc e will be provided with a comfortably furnished office at the Anderson Center along with the use of a computer, with email and Internet access, and printer. The Scholar-in-Residenc e may avail of all University amenities including the library, gymnasium and a vast array of educational and social on-campus events. The Scholar-in-Residenc e should have her/his own financial support for the duration of the stay and should display advanced written and verbal English skills.

Located in the relaxed setting of Pocatello, Idaho, nestled in the picturesque Bannock Range of the Rocky Mountains, Idaho State University is an ideal setting for scholars who are stimulated not only by the intellectual exchange of ideas but also by a rich natural environment. Outdoor recreational activities abound both in Pocatello and the surrounding areas. Pocatello is a mere 90 miles/145 km from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, gateway to the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and only 150 miles/250 km from Salt Lake City, Utah, a major city that boasts an international airport with easy connections to Pocatello via air or ground shuttle.

This Scholar-in-Residenc e program, shared jointly between the Academic Affairs-based Women’s Studies program, and the Student Affairs-based Anderson Center, affords a unique opportunity to observe and participate in the collegial environment produced by this intersectionality between theory and practice. The Scholar-in-Residenc e may come from a variety of backgrounds including gender-focused research in a scholarly discipline or practice-based work at a women’s center or similar program. It is expected that the Scholar-in-Residenc e will contribute to this environment by giving at least one lecture on her/his gender-related work during each semester, or portion thereof, that s/he is in residence. If the Scholar is in residence during spring semester, it is expected that this lecture will take place at The Art of Gender in Everyday Life Conference.

In 2005-2006, we welcomed AAUW International Fellow, Dr. Dalia Marcinkeviciene, Director of the Gender Studies Centre, Vilnius University as our Scholar-in-Residenc e for the year. A historian by training, Dr. Marcinkeviciene’ s research interests include Late 19th and Early 20th Century Lithuanian marriage and family as well as major female figures from that period in Lithuanian history. During her Fellowship year, Dr. Marcinkeviciene has pursued a full scholarly research agenda, as well as taken time to study the curricula of several Women’s Studies programs in the U.S., research that will help inform the establishment of an M.A. program in Gender Studies in fall 2006 at her Vilnius University Centre.

Applications should include a brief one-page statement of the gender-related project to be pursued while in residence, the dates of expected residency and a current curriculum vitae. Applications should be sent, via email, to:
