LOVE, PEACE AND HOUSES WITHOUT ROOFS: HOW CAN WE HELP VUKOVAR?

*WHERE?* Vukovar, Croatia

*WHEN?* July 13 – August 2, 2008

WHAT? Rebuilding the Community (RTC) is a civic activism training focused on mobilizing citizens to act for social change. It is deigned as an intense, fully experiential, and team-based immersion course, intended to help individuals learn how to initiate positive transformations in the society through developing their own social change project. In small teams in cooperation with local youth, students will initiate and develop projects that will contribute to resolving social problems identified by students as priority. This course will take you through this process step-by-step from issue identification to a live press conference.

(The full course syllabus can be downloaded at www.pushlab. org)

* WHY VUKOVAR?* The siege of Vukovar in 1991 in which the town was almost completely destroyed became the emblem of Croatia's War of Independence. Now, nearly seventeen years after the siege of Vukovar began and thirteen years after hostilities in the region ended, Croatia is a country in transition, famous as top tourist destination, with fast developing capital city of Zagreb that is becoming a flourishing regional center. Croatia is moving on, while Vukovar and alike cities are stuck, unable to cope with economic instability and by war divided communities. The reality of Vukovar
is unemployment, low salaries, "war wounds" still visible on every corner in ghostly rundown buildings. Its' reality is that Croat and Serb children and youth enroll in separate classes in school and hang out on separate places, with little hope for prosperous or even decent future if they stay in their hometown. On the top of that there's no man or woman in the town who hasn't lost someone dear and close in the war.

*WHO?* The program will gather around 40 university students from different cultural backgrounds (Croatia, USA, Balkans and EU countries). The teaching team will be a mix of Rutgers University (USA) professors and Croatian and American trainers.
