Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Marine Ecology - Institute of Marine Research,

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) invites applicants for a 4 year postdoctoral fellow or junior scientist position in marine ecology. The position is connected to the EC FP7 integrated project CoralFISH.

CoralFISH aims to support the implementation of an ecosystem-based management approach in the deep-sea by studying the interaction between cold-water coral habitat, fish and fisheries. CoralFISH brings together a unique consortium of deep-sea fisheries biologists, ecosystem researchers/modellers, economists and a fishing industry SME, who will collaborate to collect data from key European marine eco-regions. One of these regions is the Nordic Seas margin where IMR will perform the field work.

IMR is responsible for Work Package 3 Developing monitoring indicators: deep water fish occurrence and fisheries impacts and most of the work of IMR will be devoted to this task. It includes planning of sampling design, fieldwork and analyzing of data. The fieldwork will mainly be carried out onboard the research vessels of IMR and include multibeam echosounder mapping; fisheries and plankton acoustic echosounder transects on and off reef; towed multi frequency acoustic plankton sampling; ROV/tripod optical transects; and experimental longline fishing. Some of the work will be carried out on chartered commercial vessels.

Requirements

Applicant must have a PhD in marine biology, marine ecology or fisheries biology. The candidate should have experience in the use of a wide range of field sampling methods, in project management and cruise leadership. We are especially interested in a person with documented experience in the field of fish behaviour related to habitats, or research related to benthic habitat mapping. Documented skill in practical use of fishery acoustics or multibeam mapping is an advantage. Because the position will be part of an interdisciplinary project it is essential that the candidate is able to work in a team, has proven high scientific skills at the international level as well as collaborative skills.

State employment shall reflect the multiplicity of population at large. We are an equal opportunity organization and encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
