*FOREIGN PRESS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP FOR FOREIGN GRADUATE STUDENTS OF JOURNALISM*

The Foreign Press Association is offering a minimum of three scholarships to foreign graduate students of journalism in the United States, First Prize of $10,000.00, Second Prize of $7,500.00 and Third Prize of $5,000.00. The awards are meant to encourage the pursuit of a
career in journalism focusing on international affairs.

Applicants must:

1) Submit a one page statement indicating how a scholarship will affect your future plans Indicate if financial aid is needed. List all scholarships and fellowships you have received towards your studies in the United States.

2) Submit an OP-ED piece (maximum 750 words)
In many countries around the world, women suffer discrimination that prevents them from taking a full place in society equal to that of men and that exposes them in some cases to physical abuse. There are many reasons for this unequal treatment, including cultural and religious
traditions. As former President Jimmy Carter states, "Women are prevented from playing a full and equal role in many faiths, creating an environment in which violations against women are justified. The belief that women are inferior human beings in the eyes of God, give excuses to
the brutal husband who beats his wife, the soldier who rapes a woman, an employer who has a lower pay scale for women employees or parents who decide to abort a female embryo." Mr. Carter sees religion as one of the "basic causes of the violation of women's rights."

In your essay, discuss the status of women in your own country. In what ways, subtle or overt, do women suffer discrimination? What are the root causes of this unequal treatment? In what ways, if at all, has the status of women changed over the last generation? Finally, what role, if any, has the media played in your country to ensure gender equality and the rights of women? Please use statistics, studies, or other credible evidence to back up your assertions.

3) Present proof of enrollment in a Graduate program of Journalism.

4) Submit two letters of reference:
a) from a current professor,
b) from an editor you have worked for.

5) Submit only two samples of published or broadcast work. If work is in a foreign language, please send it with an English translation. Submit a curriculum vitae. Outline your previous experience in journalism and academic background. Only applicants with F-1 and J-1 Visas are eligible for consideration. Provide copy of documentation.

Five collated copies of all submissions must be sent.

The awards will be presented at the Annual Awards Reception in May 2011

The International Research Center for "Work and Human Life Cycle in Global History" at the Humboldt University Berlin and funded by the Federal Ministry of

Education and Research (BMBF) invites scholars to apply for 10 International Research Fellowships (5 stipends for senior scholars and 5 stipends for postdoctoral candidates) for the 2011-2012 academic year as well as for future academic years. Applications are due in Berlin on November 15, 2010.

Candidates: We welcome candidates especially from the disciplines of history, anthropology, law, sociology, political science, and area studies. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level or senior scholars. Postdoctoral candidates should have received their doctorate within the last five years. Proposed projects should employ a historical and transregional perspective. The project should focus not only on work/labor, but on life course as well. Possible topic areas are, among others, the household, loss of work, and free and unfree work. We welcome proposals with an emphasis placed both on European and non-European regions and especially those that look at the entanglements between different regions. In any case, global history has to be taken into consideration.

The fellowships begin on October 1, 2011 and end on July 31, 2012. Shorter fellowship terms will be possible. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend, which can be individually negotiated. They are obliged to work at the International Research Center in Berlin. A fully equipped office will be provided as well as organizational help for visa, housing, etc. We encourage fellows to introduce their work to wider audiences in the scientific community in Berlin.

Title: Two decades of experience: have we found a proper translation for the "word" development?

Synopsis: Almost twenty years passed since Kyrgyzstan became independent and took on a path of reforms and since the word "Development" entered our lexicon. Large sums of development money
were invested and great number of development programs and projects was designed and implemented. But have we yet come up with a proper translation for the word "development" ? The Russian word "razvitie" and Kyrgyz "onügüü/onüktürüü" are much broader than what is commonly
accepted as the effort towards improving the living conditions of the poor. So, when asked about the area of work, development workers in Kyrgyzstan usually just say: "I work in an international organization". Why is it so? Is it simply because of the shortage of local vocabulary or because of some more fundamental reasons, like a culture gap? With so much work completed, can we say that Kyrgyzstan is more developed now than it was in 1991? If yes, what are the real successes? If not, what are the main obstacles and failures? What is the role of development anthropology in bridging many Western concepts with the local reality?

This conference invites development professionals, consultants, experts and analysts to reflect on and evaluate their development experience in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia, present their achievements and then participate in the joint discussion of all these and other important questions.

The American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages (AATT) is pleased to announce the sixth annual Graduate Student Pre-Conference in Turkish and Turkic Studies. This Pre-Conference was established to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of AATT. The Pre-Conference
is cosponsored by the Institute for Turkish Studies, the Turkish Cultural Foundation, and AATT.

The sixth annual Pre-Conference will take place on Wednesday evening, November 17 and Thursday, November 18. This year it will again be held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association, taking place in San Diego November 18-21, 2010. Pre-Conference participants are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to attend the MESA conference. (Some meetings of the Pre-Conference are coordinated with the annual meeting of the
Central Eurasian Studies Society.)

The Pre-Conference is designed to encourage research making significant use of sources in Turkish and Turkic languages by graduate students in Turkish and Turkic Studies enrolled at institutions in North America. It will promote contact between students at various
institutions and allow for feedback from faculty discussants participating in the pre-conference. Another goal is to help students progress towards more formal presentations at national conferences such as those of MESA, CESS, and organizations devoted to specific disciplines.

AATT will award a limited number of travel awards to help subvent the cost of student participation. Students are also encouraged to seek funding from their home institutions.

Students should submit a 250- word proposal for a paper together with the following information:

1. Name
2. Current institutional affiliation (department/ university)
3. Adviser's name
4. Educational background (undergraduate and graduate degree programs)
5. Current status (taking courses, preparing for exams, researching dissertation, writing dissertation, defended/deposited dissertation)

The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, October 8, 2010.

Graduate students already presenting a paper at the larger meeting (MESA or CESS) are not eligible to participate concurrently in the Graduate Student Pre-Conference in Turkish and Turkic Studies. Post-doc ‘Fighting at the Fault lines of Society v/m For 1,0 fte

The chair Social Conflict & Change (SCC) within the Sociology department at the Faculty of Social Sciences of VU University Amsterdam has a vacancy for a PostDoc position.

Positioning
Fighting at the Fault lines of Society is a project funded by the NWO within the Conflict and Security Program. The central question of the project reads: Why do people protest (or not) and by which organizations are they mobilised (or not), and how does that relate to cleavages socio-political conflicts reflect? This project examines street demonstrations through the lens of cleavage theory. The PostDoc will exploit a dataset to be accumulated in the course of an
ESF-funded project (08-ESF-001, www.protestsurvey.eu) ?Caught in the act of protest. Contextualizing Contestation (CCC)?. This multilevel dataset aims to collect data of 100 demonstrations in 7 countries encompassing information on mobilizing actors, participants, and socio-political context. Being the largest multilevel database ever accumulated on protest participation it offers a unique opportunity to analyse various levels of conflicts. The specific objective of this PostDoc project is to employ the overall design by developing and testing a multilevel theoretical framework on protest participation.

The Social Conflict and Change cluster within the Sociology department at VU University will be the setting of the Postdoc. S/he is embedded in an inspiring and strong research group of 19 researchers headed by Professor Bert Klandermans and staffed by among others Jacquelien van
Stekelenburg and 11 PhDs, 6 of whom are supervised by Klandermans/ Van Stekelenburg. The Postdoc will also participate in the CCC team. This team pools interdisciplinary renowned experts, consisting of social psychologists, political scientists, and sociologists.

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in social sciences who can start January the 1st 2011 at the latest. Note that NWO requires that the candidate has defended his/her dissertation before this date. The PostDoc should have a strong scientific track record, preferably a
demonstrable interest in social movements, political protest and protest participation and is experienced in quantitative research methods (preferably Multi-level Analyses). Because of the
multi-disciplinary character of the group, we expect the candidates to be open-minded about different theoretical and methodological approaches and to be interested in working in a group of people from different disciplines.

Tasks
- To develop and test a multilevel theoretical framework on protest participation, leading to publications in international journals;
- Participate in coordinating tasks in the management of the CCC project;
- Participate in co-supervision of PhD students.

The Max Weber Programme is Europe’s largest postdoctoral programme in the social sciences and humanities. It is funded by the European Commission (DG Education and Culture) and hosted by the European University Institute in Florence where the research community of professors, researchers and fellows provides an excellent environment for the Programme.

The ASN Convention, the most attended international and inter-disciplinary scholarly gathering of its kind, welcomes proposals on a wide range of topics related to nationalism, ethnicity, ethnic conflict and national identity in Central Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, the Caucasus, the Turkic world, and Central Eurasia. Prospective applicants can get a sense of the large thematic scope of ASN Convention papers by looking at the 2010 Final Program, which can be accessed at http://nationalities.org/convention/pdfs/ASN_2010_Final_program-April.pdf.

The Convention also invites proposals devoted to comparative perspectives on nationalism- related issues in other regions of the world, as well as theoretical approaches that need not be grounded in any particular geographic region. Disciplines represented include political science, history, anthropology, sociology, international studies, security studies, area studies, economics, geography and geopolitics, sociolinguistics, literature, psychology, and related
fields. Papers presented at the Convention will be made available on CDs to participants, but not be posted on the ASN website.

Moreover, the Convention is inviting paper, panel, roundtable, or special presentation proposals related to three special thematic sidebars:
•“History, Politics and Memory,” on the construction and contestation of the memory of historical events in sites, political discourse and historical research;
•“Ethnicity and Violence,”on the conditions, mechanism, construction, implications and global perspective of violence perpetrated against “ethnic” groups, in Osh and elsewhere;
•“Debating Self-Determination after Kosovo”, in the wake of the recent Advisory Opinion by the International Court of Justice.

Nationalities Papers, the ASN flagship journal, will hold the first Nationalities Debate,a high profile discussion on the state of the art, as well as a new edition of the roundtable “How To Get Your Article Published”, one of the most attended panels at the ASN 2010 Convention. The roundtable will include Ethnopolitics, the other ASN journal and the ASN publishing house Taylor & Francis. Nationalities Papers will also sponsor the opening reception.

For several years, the ASN Convention has acknowledged excellence in graduate studies research by offering Awards for Best Doctoral Student Papers. The winners at the 2010 Convention were Marlene Spoerri (U of Amsterdam, The Netherlands) for the Balkans, Cristian Cercel (Durham U,
UK) for Central Europe, Nicole Eaton (UC Berkeley, US) and Michal Simecka (U of Oxford, UK) for Russia/Ukraine/ Caucasus, and Mateusz Laszczkowski (Max Planck Institute, Germany) for Central Eurasia/Turkey.

will not have defended their dissertation by 1 November 2010, and whose papers are delivered by the deadline, will automatically be considered for the awards.

The ASN Convention proudly inaugurated in 2010 the first annual ASN Harriman Book Prize—the Joseph Rothschild Prize in Nationalism and Ethnic Studies. The winner was Holly Case (Cornell U, US) for her monograph Between States: The Transylvanian Question and the European Idea during World War II (Stanford University Press, 2009). The 2011 Convention is also inviting submissions for documentaries made within the past few years and available in DVD format (either NTSC or PAL). The documentaries selected for the convention will be screened during regular panel slots and, in several cases, will be followed by a discussion moderated by an academic expert. Films on the 2009 Program included Russian Lessons (Norway/Russia, Georgia, 2009), Absence of Will (Georgia, 2009), La Shoah par balles (France, 2008), Komi-Permyak Autumn (Estonia, 2009) and Questions nationales (Canada, 2009). Proposal Information

The 2011 Convention invites proposals for individual papers or panels. A panel includes a chair, three or four presentations based on written papers, and a discussant. The 2010 Convention is also welcoming offers to serve as discussant on a panel to be created by the Program Committee
from individual paper proposals. The application to be considered as discussant can be self-standing, or accompanied by an individual paper proposal.

There is no application form to fill out in order to send proposals to the convention, but a fact sheet is required. The Fact Sheet can be downloaded at www.nationalities.org.

Individual paper proposals must include four items:
*Contact information: the name, email, postal address and academic affiliation of the applicant
*A 300- to 500-word abstract (shorter abstracts will not be considered) with the title of the paper
*A 100-word biographical statement, in narrative form (a paragraph). CVs will be rejected.

The ESRC Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford and the Centre for International Research on Care Labour and Equalities (CIRCLE) at the University of Leeds invite proposals for papers for this conference.

The conference seeks to develop connections between different aspects of the study of migrant care labour in transnational contexts: between state policies in care, migration and labour markets and the gendered and racialised divisions that shape these; in the relationship between
both sending and receiving countries; and in the different scope and contexts of care work from so-called informal or unskilled home-based labour to the professional migration of, for example, nurses.

Keynote speakers include Rhacel Parreñas (University of Southern California), Fiona Williams (University of Leeds) and Bridget Anderson (COMPAS).

Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioinformatics: NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health Nucleus, King's College, London, UK

Applications are invited for the post of Post-doctoral Researcher in Bioinformatics to join the NIHR Specialist Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health (BRC-MH). The BRC-MH, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, undertakes translational research across 7 mental disorder specific themes and 3 Cross-cutting themes. The BRC-MH received a £3m infrastructure grant from Trustees of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the Guys and St Thomas' Trust (GSTT) Charity for a ‘Nucleus' of IT developments, bioinformatics and biostatistics to support a variety of strategically important BRC-MH research initiatives.

As part of the BRC bioinformatics group the successful candidate will be expected to perform integrative bioinformatics research of an international standard complementary to the overall research strategy of the BRC-MH. This strategy includes the use of transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, neuroimaging, clinical records mining and other approaches to identify biomarkers of progression, disease and treatment response and further understanding mental illness. Duties of the role will include the development of tools for large scale data analysis, integration, mining and visualisation; the design and analysis of large variable datasets, pattern classification and mathematical/statistical modelling and programming in a variety of languages on a Linux platform.

Sociology has a deeply reciprocal relationship with technology. As Foucault reminds us, sociology has its origins in technologies of governance, especially the birth of statistics and the concomitant emergence of ‘populations’ as objects of study. Despite critical interventions at the margins, mainstream sociology continues to treat technology as a mere object of study. Technologies generate new forms of sociality that encompass both the researcher and her method – technology is already social, just as the social is already delimited by technology.

While social scientists often associate technologies with physical forms, the idea of technology has its origins in the Greek word tekhnologia, or technique – a mode or pattern of thought that is inclusive of, but not limited to, specific ‘technological objects.’ Necessarily, systems of thought often emerge before the generation of appropriate technological objects. Although there has been some research on technological objects, there has been less interest in the techno-social nexus from which these objects emerge and the ways they are shaping method – even when method does not consider itself ‘technological.’

This conference will explore the ways in which technology engages with method and method engages with technology. What subjectivities, potentialities and capacities are being generated – or suppressed – at the techno-methodological juncture? How have ideologies and social facts preceded and necessitated technological objects? How do systems of thought generate or influence the techniques of method? What kinds of technologies/methods are we using today? How is technological change shaping the questions we ask and methods we use to study the social world? What ethical problems do technologies/methods pose? What kinds of innovative methods are researchers employing using ‘new’ and ‘old’ technologies? How are new technologies (i.e. social networking media, portable media devices, etc) shaping the methods we use? How do we define a technology/method as a ‘legitimate’ research tool and how do time and technological changes alter our perception of that validity? What qualifies old (‘classical’) technologies/methods as relevant?

Technology as Method/ Method as Technology invites proposals addressing the above questions and the following thematic areas:

* the boundaries of ‘legitimate’ methods
* transgressive methods
* methods beyond disciplines
* hierarchy of methods
* power relations in methods
* power of methods
* method and political economy
* the institutionalization of marginal methods
* theorizing quantitative methods and technologies

Please submit an extended abstract of 500-750 by Thursday, September 23, 2010.

Applicants will be notified of final decisions for participation by October 1, 2010.

Postdoc: Child Psychiatry and Brain Maturation at IOP - King's College, London

We would like to invite applications for a postdoctorate researcher starting in January 2011. This is a 12 month position on a project in an NIHR funded programme of research called ‘Crossing the Divide' that aims to investigate issues relating to the transition from child to adult services. This component of the programme is concerned with the evaluation of the sensitivity and specificity of the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R) and the Development and Well Being Assessment (the DAWBA) against expert clinical diagnosis.

Details

The successful candidate will have a psychology PhD as well as postgraduate research in a relevant field. They will also be familiar with the assessment of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Salary

Starting salary range £33,070 pa (inclusive of £2,323 pa London Allowance).

Post duration

The post is funded for 12 months.

Host Organization :
The « Institut des Maladies Neurodégénératives » (IMN - Institute of Neurodegenerative Disorders) is a research unit under the guardianship of the CNRS and the University Victor Segalen-Bordeaux 2. It supports close links with the University Hospital of Bordeaux. The laboratory, featuring 95 persons, is an integral part of the Neurocampus, the Bordeaux Excellence center for Neuroscience. The laboratory is organized into 7 independent scientific teams.

MISSION :
The post-doc will be in charge, under the supervision of the project leader and in close collaboration with the other project members, of a project aiming at restoring motor performances in the Parkinson's disease gold standard, the MPTP-treated non-human primate, through the development of brain-machine interface.

This project is supported by European contract (NEUWALK) aiming at characterizing the electrophysiologial and cinematic parameters of a "normal" state, at developing the movement analysis methodology, at performing the surgical implantation of a "smart" stimulator invented and developed by our partners in the European network on the parkinsonian monkeys and at quantifying the behavioral consequences.

ACTVITIES :
- To develop protocols and adapt the experimental conditions in order to answer to the project goals
- To jointly run electrophysiologica l investigations (chronic EMG recordings, tridimensional kinematics, cortical and subcortical multi-single unit telemetric recordings) in a pathophysiological context (macaque model of Parkinson's disease)
- To share and exploit the data with the European partners in order to better define and improve the characteristics of the spinal stimulator.

EXPERIENCE :
- Strong knowledge in movement physiology, Basal Ganglia physiology, and cellular biology.
- Proven practice in electrophysiology - Master the conceptual framework
- Fluent in English

ABILITY :
The following attributes will be well-regarded: ability to communicate with people at all levels, strong time organization proficiency, aptitude to work both unsupervised and as a part of a team, competency in data processing and in using analysis softwares (e.g. Mathlab).
