CfA: Mediation Workshop With Johan Galtung, Belgrade, 24-26.9.2010

TRANSCEND THEMES AROUND THE WORLD:
THE MEDIATION WORKSHOP
Belgrade, September 24-26th, 2010

Center for Peace Studies-FPS and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung will organize a three-day workshop in Belgrade with Johan Galtung, one of the founders of the discipline of Peace Studies, and experienced mediator and educator, dedicated to the application of the Transcend method of conflict transformation.

The Transcend method of overcoming conflicts is unique in its approach because it places the highest emphasis on both/and outcomes, on human needs, in-depth analyses of conflicts, on dialogue ‘with persons, not with categories‘, and on constructive future. This means that the goal is not the ‘solution’ of the conflict, for that is too absolute, but transforming the conflict and making it more manageable by modifying the goals.

Workshop Format

The Workshop will involve small group of graduate students, journalists, representatives of relevant ministries, NGO’s and the business world, that are dealing (in their fields) with conflicts or conflict situations. During the workshop, participants would be divided into mixed groups of 5-6. Each group would work on a
particular conflict, beginning with conflicts at the micro (personal) level and proceeding to conflicts at the meso (intra-state), macro (inter-state) and mega (regional and civilization) level.

Practical Information

The workshop will be held in Zira hotel, Ruzveltova 35, from 5 pm September 24th to 5 pm September 26th. The language of instruction will be English. Participation in all sessions will be required, without exceptions. Participation is free of charge; The participants will be provided with meals and refreshments but the organizers will not be able to cover any travel or accommodation expenses.

We are expecting applications from individuals working in academic field, medias, civil society organizations, governmental agencies or companies, that have a professional interest in conflict resolution methods.
