Over the past five years, socially responsible investment has made significant headway across Europe´s financial markets. Funds under management have expanded considerably, and increasing efforts have been taken to integrate environmental, social and governance decisions into investment decision-making. Regulations for pension funds have incorporated responsible investment issues across a wide range of EU member states. Active engagement by investors has become more widespread, notably on issues such as climate change and human rights. A special focus has been placed on `mainstreaming´ sustainability and social responsibility issues - and the recent
launch of the Principles for Responsible Investment symbolises the acceptance of this approach at the highest level in Europe and elsewhere.
Building on these positive developments, it is important for the European SRI industry to take stock and along with some of its key stakeholders explore priorities for the next phase of development.
