"A novel, green technology for environmental remediation of chloro-aromatic contaminants"
Department of Zoology, Ecology & Plant Sciences

An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supported MSc studentship is available in the Department of Zoology, Ecology & Plant Sciences, University College Cork.

Supervisor: Dr. Marcel Jansen

A committed and motivated researcher is sought for an EPA funded project entitled "A novel, green technology for environmental remediation of chloro-aromatic contaminants" . In this project we will investigate the capability of duckweeds (Lemnaceae) to detoxify halogenated- organic pollutants, with the help of enzymes secreted in to the plant-aquasphere interface. Specifically, we will optimise reaction conditions, establish substrate-profiles, and work towards the development of a Lemna-bioreactor. This project has both ecological and biotechnological relevance. The project is collaboration between Dr. Marcel Jansen (ZEPS, UCC) and Dr. Dave Sheehan (Biochemistry, UCC).

Student profile:
The successful applicant will hold a good, relevant degree with a specialization in Aquatic Biology, Biochemistry or Plant Sciences, and ideally have some experience in Chemistry. The student should be highly motivated, fluent in English and have excellent laboratory skills. We expect the student to work within the timetable set for the project. The student will be enrolled in the UCC degree programme. UCC students are required to carry out some 50 hours per year of unpaid student demonstration within ZEPS.
