PhD position available in emerging tick-borne diseases - Dutch National Institute of Public Health and Environment (RIVM)

The role of the Dutch National Institute of Public Health and Environment (RIVM) covers research and advice on new infectious diseases, protection against infectious diseases in the Netherlands. The RIVM functions as a research institute and centre of expertise in the Netherlands to support policy-makers and professionals in various fields of work. The institute monitors national and international data on infectious diseases, making it possible to signal potential epidemics in an early phase (early warning).

The laboratory for Zoonoses and Environmental Microbiology has a fixed-term position available for a PhD –student in Molecular Biology

Function
The research activities of the Laboratory and Environmental Microbiology include emerging infectious diseases and their consequences for public health. The PhD student will work on emerging tick-borne diseases, such as Rickettsia. The research will focus on:
1. The development and implementation of new molecular and serological diagnostics in ticks, animals and patients.
2. The biology, genetic variation and the pathogenicity of tick-borne Rickettsiae.

Objective of the temporary 4-year position is a number of research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, which together will form the basis of the thesis leading to the granting of the PhD degree at the University of Rotterdam. After the first year, there will be an evaluation as to the feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the following three years. Salary and secondary benefits are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities.

The Candidate
We are looking for a person carrying a masters or equivalent degree in (medical) biology with a strong background in molecular biology and keen interest in infectious diseases. The project is demanding and will ask for strong teamwork, dedication as well as creative minds. Next to this, the candidate should have strong affinity with experimental work such as molecular biology, cell culture, and serological techniques. Good proficiency of the English language is required. The PhD candidate is supposed to attend international meetings and a few courses.
