PhD Studentship - Development of High Strength Novel Mg-Al Based Alloys - Brunel University

Applications from suitable candidates are invited for PhD studentship at BCAST (Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology), Brunel University. Studentship is for 3 years and cover both tuition fees and bursaries for UK and EU candidates.

BCAST is an academic research centre focusing on solidification research with an international reputation. BCAST currently comprises 27 research staff and 4 supporting staff. Our research covers structures and properties of metallic liquids, nucleation control through both chemical and physical means, alloy development and technological innovation. BCAST is also well equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See http://bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information.

This project aims at developing a novel high strength lightweight Mg-Al based alloy. It involves investigation of suitable alloy composition to achieve improved corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. High concentration of Al in Mg is known to increase corrosion resistance of the alloy. However, to obtain simultaneously the improved mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, it is important to impede the nature of periodic structure growth in eutectic system. Twin-Screw machine at BCAST allows application of high shear stress in liquid metal and will be extensively used to investigate divorcing behaviour of the coupled or periodically grown phases under intensive shearing. This project also aims at conducting experimental study to further understand the nucleation and growth kinetics of Mg-Al alloys solidified from intensively sheared semi-solid.

Solid knowledge base in either Material Science or Physical Metallurgy or Solid State Chemistry or Mechanical Engineering is essential. Experience in solidification processing and materials characterisation is desirable. Only UK and EU candidate are applicable. International candidates from all the countries are also welcome, provided they have sufficient funds to cover overseas tuition fee.
