PhD student on bone-inducing biomaterials - University of Twente

PhD student on bone-inducing biomaterials
University of Twente Faculty of Science and Technology

Job description
PhD-project on bone tissue engineering: Engineering and investigating osteo-inductive materials

Calcium phosphate ceramics are widely applied as bone fillers because bone cells migrate along the surface into the bone defect. In addition, ceramics have been developed which induce bone formation upon implantation in, for instance, muscle tissue. These ceramics exhibit superior bone filling properties in large bone defects in animals and are currently tested in a clinical trial. Unfortunately,
the molecular mechanism underlying osteo-inductivity is unknown and also porosity is currently the only design criterion influencing osteo-inductivity, which hampers further development of osteo-inductive materials.

In this project, we aim to approach osteo-inductivity from two radically different angles. First, we will try to design osteo-inductive scaffolds by generating ceramics with a predefined geometry using lithographic technology. Osteo-inductivity will be tested in appropriate animal models. Secondly, we will try to unveil the biology behind osteo-inductivity by following recently discovered leads towards the behaviour of mesenchymal and embryonic stem cells on inductive and non-inductive materials in vitro and in.
