PhD position in groundwater biogeochemistry

We are inviting applications for a PhD student position in the area of biogeochemistry of C, N and S in groundwater at the Institute of Soil Science and Forest Nutrition / Univer-sity of G€ ¦öttingen, Germany. The position will start Oktober 1 2007 for a duration of 3 years. Salary is E13/2 according to German TV-L. The incumbent will work within a project funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt which focuses on in situ charac-terization of reactive compounds available for denitrification in groundwater. The project includes the setup of laboratory- and field-scale experiments to measure denitrification. Furthermore, reactive compounds of aquifer samples will be determined by fractionation of organic C and reduced S. Dissolved gases in groundwater as well as isotopic signa-tures of N-species will also be monitored as independent estimates of denitrification. Tasks will include development of analytical procedures and of tracer tests in groundwa-ter monitoring wells. The project will provide tools for mapping long-term denitrification potential in aquifers which will assist prediction of spatial and temporal dynamics of groundwater nitrate. This will serve to improve management strategies in nitrate-contaminate d drinking water catchments.

We are looking for excellent candidates with a strong interest in biogeochemical cycling of C, N and S in subsurface aquatic systems. The successful candidate should hold a Di-ploma or MSc degree in geosciences, geoecology, agricultural or forest sciences or a re-lated discipline, preferably with a specialization in hydrogeology or soil science. Good knowledge of English is essential. The willingness for extended field trips including per-manent presence at field sites during several days and a driver€ ¦’²s license are prerequisites. Experiences with groundwater sampling equipment and/or analytical techniques (gaschromatography, mass spectrometry) are a clear advantage.

Application deadline is July 31, 2007. Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
