SSAAPS fellowships for Asia-Pacific research

The Swedish School of Advanced Asia Pacific Studies invites applications for up to three fellowship positions at a Swedish institution of higher education.

The Swedish School of Advanced Asia-Pacific Studies (SSAAPS) is a joint undertaking by The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation (RJ) and The Swedish Foundation for International Co-operation in Research and Higher Education (STINT). Since 2001 it aims at promoting research and competence building relating to contemporary Pacific
Asia. The focus is on the politics, economics and international relations in the region as well as its social, cultural and intellectual developments. The research supported by SSAAPS should be relevant for and made available to a wider audience.

To consolidate Asia-Pacific research at Swedish universities, the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation will fund up to three fellowships for outstanding young scholars in the humanities, particularly cultural studies, and social sciences.

Each fellowship is for four years and includes a compulsory year abroad at a leading institution in the field. The fellowships are open for researchers who have received their PhD degree not more than seven years ago. They can, thus, be held either by researchers who have recently taken their PhD degree (junior fellowship) or by
researchers having completed their post-doc period (senior fellowship).

Eligible to apply are scholars with a PhD degree who aim to attach themselves to a Swedish university.

The selection of the successful candidates will be based on academic qualifications, research record and the strength of the research proposal. Experience in disseminating knowledge to and interacting with external stakeholders in and on Pacific Asia will be a welcome addition. The review process will take into account not only the qualifications and competence of the applicant but also the strength
and commitment of the academic institution in Sweden where s/he will be working. In principle, the successful candidates€ ¦Ê¼ department should be willing to create a tenure-track position. The fellows are expected to take part in and contribute to SSAAPS activities in their own field of specialisation.

The fellowships are salaried according to qualifications, experience and level of appointment following normal Swedish university agreements. The extra costs for the year abroad are remunerated separately.

The application package should consist of:
a covering letter stating how you fulfil the requirements
a detailed curriculum vitae, including full publication list
two copies of the most important publications
a research proposal and plan for the fellowship period, maximum eight pages
an endorsement from the proposed hosting institution names and complete contact details of three referees.

Closing date for application is 15 October 2007.
