Nofima is a business oriented research organisation that aims to increase competitiveness of the aquaculture, fisheries and food industries. The organisation was established through a merger between the research institutions Akvaforsk, Fiskeriforskning, Matforsk and Norconserv, and has approximately 450 employees. The organisation is divided into four research divisions; Marine, Food, Ingredients and Market. Nofima Marine engages in R&D, along with innovation and knowledge transfer for the national and international fisheries and aquaculture industries. Our primary areas of research are breeding and genetics, fish health, feed and nutrition, efficient and sustainable production as well as capture, seafood, process and product development. The head office of Nofima is located in Tromsø with divisions in Bergen, Ås, Stavanger, Sunndalsøra and Averøy.
Nofima Marine is in the process of strengthening its scientific staff, and seeks applicants for the following position:
PhD student in fish health and molecular biology
We seek a PhD student within the project Cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) in Atlantic salmon: A multi-task approach to reduce losses and improve knowledge, funded by several industrial partners, The Fishery and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund and the Research Council of Norway. Research topics will be the elucidation of disease mechanisms with particular focus on developing a better and broader understanding of the pathogenesis of CMS, and the development of diagnostic tools to improve differentiation of related cardiac pathologies to allow for early diagnosis.
The project will involve extensive use of molecular techniques such as microarray, real-time RT-PCR, in-situ hybridization, gene cloning and bioinformatics. The PhD student will work together with scientists from the health group in Nofima Marine and in collaboration with research teams at the National Veterinary Institute, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research.
Applicants must hold a masters degree (or equivalent), preferably within molecular biology or related areas. Applicants are expected to have high self-motivation. The position will be located in Ås, 30 km outside Oslo for a three year period with commencement as soon as possible.
