CfA: Masters Program in Gender Studies-University of Sarajevo

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
for the second generation of the interdisciplinary postgraduate studies in:

GENDER STUDIES
The Masters Program in Gender Studies is a two year interdisciplinary postgraduate program, with the aim to educate students on methods, theories and concepts, necessary for the study of gender, general and specific contexts, as well as to teach students how to conduct the research within this interdisciplinary area. The MA Program aims to contribute for the set up of experts’ network that will be enabled to work in domestic, regional, international governmental and nongovernmental, academic institutions etc., with the common motive to promote gender research, gender interdisciplinary knowledge and gender equality within their communities. The structure of the Program emphasizes regional approach in the study of gender.

Teaching staff and topics:
The teaching staff is composed of the university professors and experts in the field of gender studies. Besides the teaching staff from the University of Sarajevo, professors from numerous universities of South-East Europe, European Union and wider will participate in the program implementation.

Educational modules are: Gender Theories; Gender and Human Rights; Gender and Politics; Gender and Balkans; Gender and Development and particular seminars which will take account of gender aspects within other scientific fields. In addition, course Research methodology in the field of gender is the part of teaching curriculum as well.

Application procedure:
Applicants for this MA program are required to hold a university degree (the grade point average should be at least 8 or equivalent in some other systems of grading), to be fluent in one of the official B&H languages (Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian) and in English language, strong motivation and good computer skills. Relevant work experience in this field may be an advantage. There are no restrictions in relation to the citizenship of the applicants, if abovementioned conditions have been fulfilled.

The Program is foreseen for a minimum 25, and a maximum 35 students. The selection of
candidates will be performed by the Scientific Council of this MA Program on the basis of submitted applications and interviews.

Applicants are supposed to submit:
- Certified copy of the university diploma (for diploma’s acquired at the universities outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is necessary to initiate the nostrification procedure upon admission examination)
- Original or certified copy of the university transcript
- Curriculum Vitae
- A letter of motivation (in the form of essay, length 3 pages, in English)
- Document that confirms active knowledge of English language (TOEFL, IELTS or certificate from the SOROS School for Foreign Languages are preferred)
- 2 letters of recommendation (at least one academic)

The application/ all aforementioned documents/ are supposed to be delivered personally or by mail to the following address: Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies of the University of Sarajevo, Zmaja od Bosne 8 (University campus), 71000 Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Planned start of the Program: September 18th 2008. Lectures will take place during the weekends (mostly) in the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies of the University of Sarajevo (CIPS).

Tuition fees: All students financially participate in the Program realization with 5000,00 KM (MA thesis defense costs included). This total amount can be paid in five installments. In addition, program implementation is co-financed by donors mentioned below.

Grants: Donors will provide grants for travel expanses for those students who do not reside in Sarajevo

Planned interviews: July 10th 2008

Application deadline: July 7th 2008. Applications send by mail are supposed to arrive in CIPS by the July 7th 2008.

Student mobility: Individuals, who fulfill aforementioned conditions, if interested for it, may apply for attending only particular modules (and be examined). Two educational modules, Gender and Development and Gender and Balkans will be completely realized in English language and thus, they are open for students outside the region as well. In addition, principle of mobility is recognized to students of the MA Program Gender Studies as well.

Public presentation of the Program: Public presentation of the Program is planned for June 16th 2008 at 12.00 a.m. and will be held in the premises of the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies, University of Sarajevo.
